  • What happens if I buy one of these flights and only do 1 way and don't take the return leg? (Need a 1 way ticket that seem to be more exxy than return)

    • You'll be fine, the airline can't hold you to it

      • -1

Actually there have been court cases over this, for example:
        https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/threads…

        • Hidden city ticketing is about getting off at a transit airport in between, ie a hidden city. There's zero obligation to take your return leg.

          • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: Hmmm… yes, I see what you mean.

            • @Gaz1: Wonder if I dont take return trip, but ring and say cant make return trip and they'll give me some sort of credit?

Reason I need one way is Im doing a hawaii to Australia cruise and only need to make it to LA one way, spend a week or so there, internal flight to Honolulu and then cruise back.

              • @31mop: You should be able to ask for a refund of the taxes component of the fare, even if it's a non-refundable ticket. There may however be a 'no show' penalty that exceeds the amount of these taxes, thus making it not worthwhile even asking.

      as long as you're not a Mexican….

  • Nice prices. Thank you :)

  • +1

Aahh, I just bought Syd-LA for $1050 (each) last week… anyone know if it's possible to get price-protection or something?!

  • Again, cant find good $$ from sep25-oct15 :(

    • +15

Oh, you can’t find cheap airfares in the school holidays? What a surprise.

      • Wow didn't even think of that. That explains it, cheers

  • But everything in US would be so expensive with AUD?

    • +1

Typically you'll find flights get cheaper as the AUD gets worse. Makes it look more tempting to go but yes America would be quite expensive with the current exchange rate. Probably equivalent to having a holiday in main tourist areas of australia.

    • +2

Don't forget we were AUD/USD 0.5 area for many years, and I guess we'll return to it after full recovery from the GFC.
IE AUD could be much worse, so go for it if you can.

    • A lot more expensive than 7 or 8 years ago, but still not horrendous. Car hire and food is generally quite affordable, so you'll unlikely be paying more for those than you do in Aus.

It's the accommodation that kills you, and that can be mitigated by using AirBnB.

      • AirBnb is ridiculously expensive now. Works out to be more than a hotel when comparing facility/amenities.

        • +1

Not really. If you want a basic room in a nice house, you can easily find one for less than $100 in LA, when even a fleapit will probably cost you north of $150/200. I do agree though that the service charges and cleaning charges are getting a bit out of hand.

  • Anyone know how long Perth to LA flight would take these days. In 1980's it took 16 hours plus MLB stopover.

    • +1

It wouldn't have stopped in MLB as that airport is in Florida (would have been MEL). In the 1980s they did usually have a stopover in Nadi or Honolulu, although they might have had non stop on the 747SP service. Matter if fact if you got a TN or AN 727 service to MEL and a 747SP service to LAX it would have been faster than any service today as both aircraft were faster than anything today (although they were fuel guzzlers).

Due to headwinds/jetstreams the flight to LAX is just under 20 hours heading to LAX and over 22 hours heading back (with about 2 hours stopover) from PER.

      • Thanks. Yes MEL, and on the way back Nadi. Sat next to a lovely young nadi girl so remember the stop.
Can't wait for the SpaceX 1/2 hour to anywhere on earth rocket. Seriously 20+ hours twice is not for me.

  • Can anyone recommend some decent accommodation in los Angeles it's my first time with the family, Is around the grove in west hollywood any good, will be there 5 days and 1 day at disney thanks

  • Awesome 🙂.
Booked Melbourne to Vegas with a 10 day stopover in Los Angeles for a total of $1156.84.

These flights were closer to $2k last couple of days.

    • What dates? If you don't mind pls.

  • +1

Interesting, I bought tickets Melb to LA about 4 months ago for this period and the price hasn't changed… I wonder if they didn't sell as many as anticipated.

  • Bought last week for $999. Ugh.

  • Is the free cavity search at LAX still included in the price?

    • +1

If they find one, you wont be able to afford dentistry over there anyway.
