Moving from Adelaide to Brisbane

Our family (two kids) will be moving to Brisbane soon for a new job. I would be grateful if people here answered two questions. The specific one first. What is the best/cheapest way to bring my desktop from Adelaide to southern Brisbane? The more general question is if there are things that I need to be ready for that are not so obvious for someone who has only lived in South Australia. I only spent two days in Queensland so far. Anything like weather, road, state schools, public transport, parks. Thank you.

  • My observations of both cities is that there are quite a few similarities.
The weather will be different, more likely higher humidity in summer.
Brisbane probably has a better public transport network, particularly the buses and ferries.
The biggest difference, if you are into Aussie Rules in SA, is the Qld preference for Rugby League. You might want to study up on that for the Monday morning work conversations.

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

What was Wenger thinking, sending Walcott on that early?

Thing about Arsenal is, they always try and walk it in.

  • The temperature may show as hotter in Adelaide but make no mistake, the humidity makes Brisbase way hotter and there is no escape by standing in the shade. The city centre is a lot smaller than Adelaide but the suburbs go a fair way out. Where were you thinking of living? Anything within 10kms of the city will be quite expensive but public transport makes it fairly easy to get around. Southside has a busway, trains, freeway and motorway so is the easiest to get around from. Inner West and north are the worst by far due to the terrible road system and lack of highways. Unfortunately it is also one of the nicer areas, just sucks for transport.

Cheapest way to bring your desktop would be as checked baggage on a flight you're already taking, I reckon, but it removes from "actual" packed baggage like clothes and stuff, and it's not exactly the safest in terms of it arriving in working order. It can definitely be done though, you'd just have to pack it super carefully and with lots of padding etc.

Having lived in both, Adelaide for 9 years and Brisbane for ~6 and counting. My thoughts:

Weather: Sucks in Brisbane. Humidity is a killer and I absolutely hate it. Much preferred Adelaide's version of heat.
State schools: Can't comment, no kids, but there's good and bad schools in both cities I'd guess.
Public transport: Way better in Brisbane, but also more expensive. Adelaide's public transport was fine if you lived further out, the fixed fares weren't great if you lived close to where you were going.
Parks: Plenty of good ones, and amusement parks on the Gold Coast if that's your thing.
Entertainment: I miss things like Adelaide Fringe / Arts / that solid month block of festivals, but more international bands come to Brisbane than Adelaide. Generally if they were going to Adelaide you'll catch them in Brisbane, but some might only do an "East Coast" leg and skip Adelaide. Less disappointment.
Language: Potato fritters are potato scallops in Brisbane.
Localisation: QLD tends to have public holidays that don't align with other states for whatever reason. QLD also doesn't have Daylight Savings Time.

Basically I think there's something to enjoy no matter where you're living. You make the most of your situation, and while there's a lot on paper that you could say is "better" in Brisbane that doesn't make Adelaide "worse" either.

things that I need to be ready for

Queensland has a state owned electricity grid rather than an electricity grid owned by a 100% foreign owned monopoly.

Guess which state has world record prices.

It's not the one that believers in neoliberal economic theory would tell you.

  • Don't move to the Logan area, Inala or Underwood

    • Is recommend Woodridge, beautiful place.

  • Welcome to Brisbane! I just had visitors from SA last week.

Regarding humidity, whilst some earlier posts said it’s bad, me and my family are perfectly fine. It’s nothing compared to FNQ or Asia. In fact at times I find it too dry esp during drought season.

As for your desktop, can you transport it with your furniture and bulky items?
I have actually got rid of my bulky PC tower and using a Intel NUC. So minimalist.

Housing is very much a personal choice. Brisbane is divided by the river, so we have Southsiders, and Nortsiders. And also West and East. Would suggest you pick one good with public transport and close to schools. How old are your kids? If you intend to send them to private schools, you can live anywhere. But if you want a good public school, need to live within the catchment area.

Sounds like you don’t know a lot about Brisbane. Ever thought of one parent come first?

Feel free to ask any specific question anytime.
