Buying car off Facebook Marketplace

Hey guys, I plan on going to look at a car over the weekend. Everything seems fine at this stage. Awaiting the VIN for a pprs check. My only concern is the Facebook account only has 1 friend and was made this year. Should that be a concern or worth overlooking?

All good, they've got a good reason to hide their identity.

    Be concerned.

  • How much is the car? Is it a significant bargain? Are there many others out there like it?

    • It's a 2008 Nissan murano. Not many around that I can see. Hard to know what's a good price. I was aiming for $6000

PM me the rego number and I'll get you the vin

        • Cheers. Its not in the photos. So I'll ask for that and forward your way.

@obit11: lack of rego would concern me

            • @brad1-8tsi: They might be keeping the plate. We masked the plate in our for sale ad for that reason

              • @coxjon: shouldn't matter. you just say "plate not included"

                • @brad1-8tsi: Depends on your line of work, we didn’t want ours identifiable to current or future work clients. Anyway, yeah it’s usually not a good sign but they might have a good reason.

Update for those playing at home - car is PPSR clean, but showing it's older than advertised.

You're too nice Spackbace - good work looking that up.

      • Known issue with head gaskets on muranos of that year.

You need a couple more poll options:

    • Say you will go, but don't show up. No-one goes when they say they will.

    • Take a friend and remain cautious. If it works out, all good, and if it doesn't just walk away.

      Leave friend as a decoy.

You can just run the rego number to get the VIN.

    https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/check-vehicle-reg…

    • That usually doesn’t give you the VIN. It will only give you the last 4 digits. Even if you pay the $22 for the vehicle history, it will only give you the partial VIN.

      • I haven't done one in NSW, but in VIC and QLD you definitely get the full vin

People want to use facebook marketplace for its benefits over gumtree but not really use facebook because of the zuck

I would not be too concerned

Rule of the thumb is if they are hiding their rego number they are hiding something that they don't want you to know.

    • Maybe they don’t want you to know the ergo number?

Sounds too dodgy. They're going to scam you but don't want their friends and family to find out or you be able to track them down by the info they post on their profile.

  • My FB account is locked down pretty hard and I sold my car on FB marketplace a few mths ago. As long as you do proper checks then you won’t have any dramas.

  • No different to ringing a random back in the days of the classifieds. Do all the normal checks as part of your DD. The fact that someone does/doesn't have a great FB following doesn't mean a lot.

Like any used car purchase you should be concerned. Being sold by a private person is not additional cause for concern, but a good reason not to throw caution to the wind. No different to gumtree. Do your checks, don’t hand over money unless you get the rego transfer signed and the keys.
