Where to buy Cheap Asian Groceries and Pantry Items (Sydney)

Hi OB!

Where do you do your Asian groceries in Sydney area? I find most South East Asian groceries don't have catalogues like woolies and coles. When I go shopping, I usually buy most things full price or have to remember certain prices for different items.

Staples include soy sauce, oyster sauce, condensed milk (which is sometimes cheaper at woolies and coles when on special), kewpie mayo which is sometimes on special at Thai-kee IGA at Haymarket. Tong Li prices are mostly uniform but definitely not cheap.

At the moment, I'm into Nissin ramen noodles but hard pressed to find stock, and even then, it's not on sale.

I live in Bankstown, shop around Cabra/Fairfield/Ashfield/City cause I'm usually in those areas for work/going out etc.

I'm not even from Sydney and I know Cabramatta is Asian area… Where else are you wanting to get Asian groceries from?!

I think he means cheaper than what's already on offer, or hoping for specials like the weekly Coles and Woolies ones.

Good luck in getting your cheap Asian groceries …

      • Thanks haha yeah, I was referring to cheaper places. There are lots of groceries around, with fairly uniform pricing. Just wondering if there are certain places that do specials weekly or even monthly.

It's one of my me-time things to do on a Sunday after a tennis session, grocery shopping.

No. Tong Li does specials but when, I don't know and that's all I can think of.

Australian passport holders will need a visa to enter Cabramatta.

    • Parking is a nightmare!!! Luckily, I don't mind walking that 5-10 minutes to the shops there.

If it makes you feel any better the prices at Chatswood are a ripoff lol. Even compared with Eastwood the prices are almost always higher in Chatswood.

Gotta pay for that expensive rent on Victoria Avenue!

  • I thought cabra/bankstown has the cheapest prices on offer. Why look else where?

If you don't mind nullify your savings on the petrol, try Campsie.

    • I'm usually in the area, passing by, or hanging out with friends there so don't mind the visit. Anywhere in particular in Campsie?

      • Not particular but plenty of SE/Asian grocery store stretches along Canterbury Rd.

  • Japanese vending machines, according to urban myth.

  • Have you tried Miracle Supermarket? I cannot comment in terms of prices however they tend to stock hard to find items and the staff are very helpful.

  • Do you have a list of what you want and current pricing to compare whether they are cheapest already.

E.g. Kewpie Mayo 1kg is cheapest I found at Costco at $9.99. Other Asian places sometimes over $11

Some other things cheaper at Costco would be the tofu and soy sauce. Fish sauce more expensive at Costco vs Cabra

Greens are cheaper at Cabra/Bankstown/Asian stores

  • Try Burwood, Flemington or Eastwood

    • Asian's hangout spots.

      • You buy Asians' stuff from Asian suburb that make 100% sense

          Asian suburb

Do you need a visa to enter those places?

          :p j/k

  • How much are you paying for the Nissin noodles?

  • Usually Tong Li for me, less hassle as it has what I require there. I find Miracle a bit more dearer overall.
