Claiming TRS When Flying International with Scoots (from Melbourne) and Travel Sim for China

Hi OZbers,

I have googles but no cannot find a direct answer. The TRS counter is located in terminal 2, so I am leaving via terminal 4 I wont be able to use the TRS counter. If that is the case, are there other ways to claim TRS?

I will be stopping in China for 3 weeks. Are there sims for travellers for DATA?

    1) Scoot leaves T2 at Melbourne - see https://www.melbourneairport.com.au/airline-information

    2) Get one in HK or Singapore if possible so that way you're won't have to deal with the Great Firewall

    • shadowsocks works just fine in China…

    • for some reason I thought Scoots depart from terminal 4. Thanks!

  • From my research you can get prepaid sim cards in China as a tourist. However the only provider with compatible radio bands for Australian phones is China Unicom.

Apparently you can go to a Unicom store but it will depend on whether you can speak the local language or you get lucky and someone can speak English. This is the cheapest option.

You can also order sim cards from eBay, get them sent here then you just activate when you arrive. There is obviously a risk with the sim not working properly. There is a small extra cost on top of the sim card value.

There are also companies online that sell tourist sim cards and will deliver them to your hotel. This is the most expensive, but seems to have more of a guarantee that you will have data.

  • thanks guys. I should be able to get a sim sorted.

  • Scoot airlines land and clear custom at T2. Same terminal and same gate will take scoot passengers. Other terminal are domestic. There's only 1 way out.

As for the SIM. Be sure to get the one from Australia. You will get full access to YouTube Google's Facebook whatsapp. Not sure China SIM card will block you from these.
