[UPDATE 1] TPG ADSL2+ Is Very Very Slow, No NBN in My Area Yet, Is There Any Good Alternative?

This post is meant for people who's wondering what W3Networks is like I suppose. Basically yeah I switched over from TPG ADSL2+ to W3Networks Airfibre Basic 60 plan (it's $80/month whereas the TPG ADSL2+ is $60/month).

Anyway, here's the receiver/router setup in my apartment

And here's some speedtest from some speed test websites

So…, download speed usually hovers around 32-36Mbps and upload speed is around 6.7-10 Mbps. Not exactly 100% happy about it because the download speed promised to us is actually "up to 60 Mbps" so I thought maybe we could get 55 ish Mbps but nope, we're only getting 30 ish - 43Mbps top and that's it. The W3Networks technician told us that we can't get anymore than that in our area.

The ping is fine, I can still play Rocket League with no problem. Well…, to be honest with you, the latency is actually better compared to TPG ADSL2+ from before so I can't complain. If there's anything worth mentioning, it's that the router they gave us is total crap (intermittent disconnects, dropout, slow internet speed) and that's why I had to buy a new router, TP Link Archer C7 AC1750 v2.0. myself (I'm using the 5GHz mixed channel for my WiFi).

Anyway, that's all really from me, this is like 1000x better already compared to my TPG connection though where I only got 1-2 Mbps (3.5 Mbps top) download/0.2-0.5 Mbps upload speed.

Cheers guys~

  • Hi there. NBN just coming to my area (Sydney south west) so I think I will just go with nbn. Testing tpg for now but most likely will go with exetel next month.

    • Hi again @ChiMot,

      Damn I'm jealous haha. Yea I want cable/NBN too it's just that I don't have any in my area so this one and Optus 4G are probably my only options for now (until what, April-June 2020?)

  • What happens if the blutack or suction cup fails in the sun? Have W3 recommended any other ways of mounting the antenna?

    • +1

      @bdl,

      Yeah me and my landlord were worried about it as well. Nope, there's no plan B or anything like that, basically if it falls, then you won't have any internet connection and you have to call W3Networks technician to come over and attach another glue/use another suction cup but that's literally it.

      Not ideal I know, but it is what it is mate, I don't have any other options in my area for now so I'll use this one until NBN arrives.

      • If the suction cup was above the receiver the load would be more in shear rather than pulling outwards. You could even hang it off the curtain track

  • 8ms on wireless. that better than i get on tpg adsl2+

    • Yeah it's actually not too bad. Well it's not always 8 ms mate, it varies from 6 - 14 ms but the what's most important to me is that it's good enough and I don't notice any substantial lag in Rocket League (this is literally the only game that I play LOL)

  • lol keep us posted
