Headunit AM Reception

We like Radio National and other AM stations, and we are in the market for a replacement Double Din head unit. So, among all the other factors, which makes or models bring in the strongest AM? I suspect that European makes might be the worst on this spec.

Your favourite ABC networks are all on DAB+: local ABC Radio, ABC RN, ABC NEWS, ABC Classic FM and triple j.

Get a DAB unit if you can, and if you live in the metro area

  • No DAB here, having escaped Sydney at last. But can receive Sydney AM and some FM stations.

  • DAB only works in inner city melb, syd, etc.. last time i looked. Useless for most people.

The gain strength of radios can vary a lot, even within the same brand. Antenna configuration also affects the distance.
I have a chinese junk 2 din system in my car, had it for about 5+ yrs now and the reception strength is amazing… on both fm & am. An expensive factory upgrade unit in our other car cannot compete with it… just on radio gain alone the expensive one breaks up 20-30km from the station but the crap chinese one still pulls in a solid signal over 100km away. The crap chinese unit (Joying) also beats the $$$$ upgrade unit in every other area BTW.

A lot will depend on your antenna setup in your car. Some are just designed for inner city use and quickly fade in the outer suburbs, some do better. Some or all? Toyotas have what is called a dual diversity antenna system with a signal booster and they do give a good signal but again this depends on the gain strength of the head unit. What is your car?
You can buy after market shark fin type roof antennas that may improve reception.

The signal gain strength of tvs are also similar… paying a lot of $ for a well known brand can mean nothing in the reception quality area.. Sony tvs are one example unless they have improved. Manufacturers never give specs on tuner gain strength and if they did they would probably lie anyway.

Another alternative is to use your mobile phone data and bluetooth link it to your headunit. Works for me in far away places… perfect reception for any station in the world.

  • Yep, I'm looking for my old Bluetooth speaker.

    • Forgot to mention you can also link the HU to your phone via hotspot & wifi.
