American Express Surcharges

Hi,

I'm about to get a home loan with a bank and as part of the package they are offering me either an American Express Gold Card or a Mastercard Gold Card. The AE Card will earn two points per dollar whereas the MC only 1 point per dollar. I already have a Mastercard.

So I was wanting to know if there is a wiki or a document that states all the places that charge a surcharge for American Express. Or vice versa for places that don't.

If there isn't maybe we could start one?

I'm pretty sure JB Hifi charge the surcharge.

    • Thanks for that, that covers most if not all of the big retailers.

  • Went to E&S Trading yesterday to get a washing machine… they charge a surcharge for Amex and Diners. 3%

Went to Good Guys to get the dryer (and wait for my Amex $50 rebate which somewhat offsets the delivery cost :P) and they do not charge a surcharge for Amex.

  • Do they offer both on the one account? I have this with the NAB and I know other banks do this. It allows you to use AMEX to get the points when there is no surcharge, and when there is you just use the Mastercard.

  • Yes JB HiFi Brass need to look at this a bit harder…last time i purchased from them i said drop the price to match the price with no surcharge…or no deal… purchase done and dusted…but if you have to haggle it takes the edge off know what i mean.

(Don't know why such a big retailer is no good at their OWN negotiations with suppliers(ie amex)

  • They ended up sending me both an American Express and a Mastercard which are linked to the same account.

    • Great westpac card
