Harvey Norman - Won't Price Match with Electrical Items over $399

I am about to buy a new fridge and asked Harvey Norman to price match a competitor.

They would not price match because it was not a 'like for like' product. Harvey Norman currently offers a bottle of wine with electrical purchases over $399 and the competitor does not.

Once the promo is finished at the end of the month, the price goes up $200. But there most likely will still be plenty of competitors with prices at the current level.

I don't want the bottle of wine, just the cheapest price. Are they within the policy to do this or are they bending their own rules so they don't have to price match?

This applies to all electrical items over $399.

I suggest you stop worrying about this and try bargaining at a different store. Or better, try the other stores like TGG, Jb HiFi, etc.

How stores interpret policies is entirely up-to the salesperson you are dealing with at the time.

Why not just buy off competitor?

    • Exactly ^^

    Seems like a Bait-And-Switch tactic.

Bait for a fridge and Switch to a bottle of wine.

What Gerry trying to say is that wine bottle goes inside the fridge, after you bought it.

Hmmm the wine promotion is not being advertised as being "free" so I guess technically it's not a like for like product. I suggest you reward the competitor that has priced it for lower.

I would think of it like Harvey is selling a vacuum and the promotion instead was for extra accessories.

I don’t understand the point of this post. You say you want the cheapest price. The competitor has the cheapest price. What do you want from us? Who cares about Harvey Norman’s internal policies, all you should care about is price but you are letting your mind get pulled in the wrong direction.

Just go with someone else. I think everyone should stop wasting time going to Harvey Norman. Their price matching policy has an "out" clause for pretty much everything at their discretion. I have only been successful once maybe 4 or 5 years ago, tried a few times since then but was declined every time because they just don't want my business. Maybe try Good Guys and see what they can do, I managed to get them to price match ebay 20% off one time on some lower value appliances.

It’s simple, if they don’t offer a lower price, do your shopping with the place that does give you the best deal. Harvey Norman stores have been blacklisted at home and where I work. We don’t support that money grubbing arsehole at all.

I have never understood price matching. If a store is only going to match a price, then just buy it at the first place that offers the best price. It saves you driving to another store and them just giving you the same price as the first store.

And did I mention (fropanity) Gerry Harvey and (fropanity) his stores. I still buy my goods overseas Gerry, because even with the 10% Gerry’s Sook Tax added, it’s still cheaper than buying it off you, ya grubby little (fropanity).

i founded the same issue when trying to price match laptops with HN, for some reason they have a different model numbers for what should be the same laptop( same specs) at a different store.

        That is how scam works.

    • I remember a few short years ago how Gerry Harvey described his modest lifestyle being shaped by his belief that if the economy goes downhill, he will find it hard to survive with personal assets valued at only just above $1 billion dollars, of which a great proportion was high-liquidity…

Buy from original store that's offering the price, or go to Good Guys or similar for a price match.

Would've taken less time than a forum post trying to find reason to Harvey's decision, and/or trying to force their hand and make them price-match.

Advise them alcohol is against beliefs and dont want it

  • Maybe try price-matching it again via online chat? You might have got someone having a bad day.
I got HN to pricematch a fridge just last month and HN were also offering a bonus $100 eftpos giftcard with it but the competitor was not. The fridge was well over $399 too. Online chat had no issues price matching it and I still received the gift card.
As for why I bought at HN and not the competitor - HN was closer, the bonus $100 giftcard + paying using discounted giftcards bought through AGL made it a significantly better deal.

Can’t really comment as haven’t been to HN in years, gave up when they refused to price match every time.

  • Price matching is only worth it in some certain cases. There may be no benefit in your situation. Now a price beat is a different story & may be worth it.

Don't waste your time & go with the competitor if its the cheapest.

  • Why not just buy at the competitor with best price?

What is the purpose of this post?

I think OP is aiming to get the lowest possible price for fridge[price match] + free wines.

a bottle of wine with electrical purchases over $399

    That's not correct. It's a 12 bottle case.

  • If you want the cheapest price and you know it's somewhere else… go there?

  • Maybe OP wants to get on interest free and cannot get it from the cheapest place. this is also a reason they wont price mate, interest free is at advertised price.

    Price match the wine

  • I'm guessing you have some HN gift cards or other AmEx related reason to persist with dealing with them?

If not, just go to the competitor. But tell them that's what you're doing.

I was able to get them to match a price on a fridge when they were giving an esky as part of the deal. They way they apply their policy seems arbitrary.

So buy the fridge from the cheaper store and buy the wine from Aldi. Geez!
