especially if the cream contains milk products - melamine anyone?

      • Precisely! In general I dont beleive there is such a thing as health standards over there, it's anything goes….so I simply refuse to buy food products from third world countries which is a shame because I quite liked Oreos.

Ugh, I just noticed the "dunk" pun..

All Nabisco products are made in China and owned by the Americans. At least Arnotts are made in Australia, and despite the incessant advertising of Oreos, I find that local alternatives are far tastier.
No matter how many mini basketball hoops you offer me, I'm not going to be buying any Nabisco products :(

    • +1

oreos in america are locally made

      • Yes, sorry, I wasn't clear.

So, I assume that means you could get two of these mini basketball hoops with the catalogue sale? If so, that's a bargain in my book :D

    • Yep - I did this and it worked! Awesome bargain!

  • +3

At least you are getting melamine protein through the milk powder used for the biscuits.

Anyone actually got one of these from a coles store yet? Are they any good? :)

    • +2

Got mine, apparently the checkout chicks have no clue where the Coles chatswood chase store was storin them, has to got the manager. A lot of work for a baby ball and hoop. Seems to be only able to stick on glass though and you will need a pump to pump the ball. Pretty good as I am a avid basketball fan.

      • The four foam pads on the back of the backboard are actually adhesive. Just peel off the grease paper.

  • +1

I noticed in First choice Liquor as well you can get a free full sized basketball with a purchase of a budwieser slab. Not sure how long that was for.

    • Which store did u go?

      • Tooronga.

  • for everyone talking about chinese milk products. i believe oreos are vegan, and contain no milk products.

    • That makes me even more concerned what's in them!

Australia is one of the most regulated countries in the world. They are not just going to import bad thing into the country, especially foodstuffs. Having said that, large supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths wouldn't even attempt to sell bad things for risk of people complaining and suing, etc. Plus it's a real pain to do product recalls, potential loss of reputation, etc.

    • +3

And our regulations have little effect on the practices that happen in overseas factories and time and time again it's proven that anything goes in Chinese factories….

    • woolworths has been shown to break the law in the past with no regard due to the massive size of the business. Don't see why selling food for them would be any different!

While I agree and wouldn't be paranoid we should also be realistically wary. Our food inspectors/testers have enough work with restaurants/take aways in Oz to keep them struggling. It's not much effort to set up in a new location even if caught out and business drops but usually it's a slap on the wrist (ACA/TT could easily run a story every night on dodgy food preparation if they wanted. The customers are going to the media for a reason). Supermarkets wouldn't knowingly bring in a dodgy product - the problem is no one here is in a position to test shipments of food product on a regular basis (the importers or retailers).

There have been enough bad food manufacturing experiences (from countries with lax standards/enforcement) already that should never have taken place (lead, melamine, etc are not like a peanut falling into the wrong product).

Have you heard about the recalls/concerns about Bubble Tea ingredients overseas? Neither did I (crappy local media/authorities) and we have large number of stores/chains popping up like Easyway. I asked the state food authority if they were aware of the DEHP contamination affecting other countries (eg. From Taiwan to countries in the UK, Singapore, etc) a month ago and got no reply - Speaks volumes. Politicans/lawyers react after people get hurt.

Just an eg, http://www.teaworld.com.au/ Ingredients tested? Sure… ;-)

  • Got one for my 20 months old son.

  • I just want the hoops, hope my local has them…checkout chick knew nothing about it today gr.

    • My Coles had the hoops on the shelf with the Oreos. The hoops actually scan through at $3 each if you don't want the Oreos, though with the current catalogue sale it's better value if you buy four boxes of Oreos for $5 and get two sets of hoops for free.

      • +2

Went in today and it was exactly as you described and I did notice the $3 too which comes off automatically when you buy 2. However 4 boxes of Oreos and 2 hoops for $5 is goooooood value!

  • Got mine yesterday, woohoo, anything free is awesome…..

  • My Coles had the mix and match with those Cadbury small blocks, so I purchased 2 x Oreos and 2 x Cadbury blocks for $5.

Tip: The ball needs inflating with a needle, but if you are like me and your home or workplace doesn't have a needle use the following - plastic spray tip of a can of WD40 or similar (clean it first!) and some pliers. Jab the makeshift 'needle' through the ball using the pliers and then blow. Worked for me and has achieved some productivity for today :)
