eBay Return Question

Recently had a cleanout and sold an electronic device that I haven't ever really used. It was a case of do I just throw it out or put it on eBay. After starting to do the ad I realised I hadn't seen the remote any time recently so just listed it without it, it wasn't in the pictures but also I didn't state in the description that it was missing but sold very cheaply as the remote was missing.

I now received a message from the buyer saying the remote is missing and if I don't have it he will want a refund. The amount involved is pretty negligible so I will likely just refund if I can't find it, but more just annoyed at the waste of time.

Not that I can be bothered going down the eBay dispute path and wasting more time but curiosity has me wondering if I did what their likely response would be.

Sounds like the mystery device is very obviously something that comes with/requires a remote and you knew no-one would buy it without one… Give the buyer their refund already and stop wasting their time.

    • You can use it with a universal (Logitech) which is what I did and what I thought someone else would also do, if it was unusable I would have just binned it but was mainly trying to avoid more landfill.

      • How was the buyer supposed to know they needed a universal remote when you didn't put it in the listing?

        • The original remote wasn't listed as missing, which I intended to add in the description when I realised but forgot to go back and do. The pictures showed what was included though (including manual and cables) and it's obviously a device that normally requires a remote.
It's not worth someone purchasing a remote for, but thought if someone had a universal remote then the missing remote might not be an issue.

        • I am not claiming to not have contributed to the situation, just wondering when caveat emptor is and isn't applicable.

@tryagain: Give them your Logitech remote?

            • @oscargamer: I use it for multiple devices, the dollar figure is pretty minimal, I had already told him to start the refund claim before this this post, it was more a case of who is technically in the wrong. But if the masses are correct it is me. It would have been interesting to see though, if I had posted from the other perspective if the result would have been the same.

Tell them “no problem”, and ask them to send it back to you. Once it is returned, send them the refund.

    • I did contemplate doing this just to make sure they weren't trying to be sneaky as the postage cost was the major portion of the total sale price, but then thought that maybe I could be stung for the return postage costs as well.

Sounds like you were the one doing the sneaky

        • Gave it a thought, if I seriously considered it I would have looked into who would be liable for shipping. The $$$ amount means a refund isn't really an issue, I was more originally contemplating it as a way to see if the refund request was genuine or not.

If the item is returned because it's faulty, not as described, or damaged in the post, the seller has to pay return postage costs

So yeah you would be slung for the postage unless the buyer is kind or doesnt know about how ebay works for returns

Intending to do something and failing to do it is not a defence.

  • I dont really think you have a case here, sorry to tell you the true.

Just offer a compensation and ask the buyer to get a remote himself.

As a universal remote aren't that cheap compare to the selling price of your item.

  • Give them their money back.

Relist the item clearly stating in the description "No remote."

    • As I have previously stated, I have already told them to start the refund process (don't think I can initiate it from my end) and the postage cost is more than the sale price of the of the item so not worth paying the return postage costs.
