Booking through Trip Advisor

Hi all!

I've been looking at using airbnb for a trip to Japan, but it seems there aren't as many around anymore since they have tried to regulate it. I noticed that trip advisor was offering something similar to airbnb with some competitive pricing in a good area.

There aren't many reviews on the listings, and I've never used trip advisor to book accommodation before.

What are your thoughts and experiences with booking holiday homes through them?

Thanks all!

Edit: Just to clarify I mean the airbnb like side of it where there are private listings, there's one with a few reviews I was looking at, and one reviewer has done quite a few reviews, so it looks legit, but I'm still feeling a little iffy about it

  • I haven't used TripAdvisor to book accommodation but rakuten and japanican sometimes have accommodation that's not available on the multinational websites.

  • Doesn't Tripadvisor just link to other booking websites? In any case I think that Tripadvisor would want to protect their brand name and will not let you get ripped off.

  • There are loads of trip advisor apartment rental scams

  • i used the TripAdvisor version of AirBnB when I went to the San Francisco in 2014(?). The owner cancelled my booking 1 week before we were due to leave. It cost me a fortune for alternate accommodation. There was no compensation from trip advisor whereas AirBnB in a similar situation offered me $250 in compensation credit plus my original booking costs as they acknowledged that prices had increased since my original booking and it would be difficult to find alternate accommodation.
