Single Touch Payroll Options for Micro Employers

My company has 3 employees. Has anyone used the free micro employer options for STP found on https://www.ato.gov.au/business/single-touch-payroll/in-deta…?

Has anyone used the free Reckon Single Touch Payroll Mobile App? Out of all the free options, Reckon is the only one I've heard of. Are the likes of Xero and MYOB charging $10 a month actually better? Thanks.

I've been frustrated with MYOB for the last month. For example, employees can submit timesheets online and it'll autiomatically calculate hours worked (which is good). But as the employer I can't enter a timesheet on an employees behalf, only number of hours worked. Bank feeds still not working after 4 weeks of calling both MYOB and the bank. So far wouldn't recommend MYOB, I'm actively looking around for other options too.

  • I am using Reckon one payroll for $5/month for unlimited employees.

It’s easy to use after setting up; I use the online application to calculate weekly pay, PAYG and super. I then manually bank transfer wages to employees like used to but need to do it this way for STP.

And, I have no experience in using the free application for <4 employees.

    • Is the online application to calculate hours built into reckon one? And does it save this data to each employee's file including accumulated pay, tax, super, leave, sick leave etc? If it does, hat'd be enough to get me to bin MYOB and switch

      • I don’t understand your question sorry.

I manually enter the hours for each employees every week. Everything else gets calculated automatically and saved.
Keep in mind, the $5/month is only for payroll.

  • We use Xero for all our financials and payroll for $60 a month and STP is just part of it. Just an additional click everytime we run the payroll. So can't comment on what the $10 a month solution would be like.

  • Try QBO, can get good subscription deals and is fully functional accounting wise. Reckon is a bit bland and on the nose. Xero expensive, MYOB useless.

  • After few days of getting frustrated on trying to use Clockon which is complicated with not sure what's wrong with the STP wizard that doesn't want to display the trial payroll runs, I have tried Payroller app which buggy, showing wrong tax amount with no option to change it. I've then found out the desktop version with Chrome which to my surprise is different with the app. I have now completed all July-Sep payrolls for few employess easily. Payroller is free to use. Note though you need to register Payroller in Auskey, go to Settings then STP settings to see the instructions link to do so, not that difficult. You should be able to complete the runs in an hour from original setup.

The one thing I'm not sure about is this thing really work? Doesn't have confirmation or anything, I only see 13 payroll runs in 'Done' status. I click few of them which has 'Report STP' but then I stopped, worrying that it will do double reporting.

    • You should be okay as when you report to the ATO, you are reporting the year to date data.
For example, so far, the employee has earned $2000 this year, and her pay is $500 for the week.
When you report using STP, you are telling the ATO gross income $2500 + xxx for PAYG + xxx for super

      • Thanks. What I was wondering is the technicality of the submit button in that Payroller. Customer service has advised me to enabled STP in STP setting. The 'Done' status should changed to 'STP Done'. Currently all my payrolls are in 'Pending' status, I guess ATO servers are super busy tonight as last day to process.
