Lenovo ThinkPad 8GB RAM Installed but Only 5.88GB Usable

I got one of the Lenovo e595's that was on here recently. Is anyone else's showing only 5.88 gb usable Ram? It says this in System.
I know it's got 8 gb installed and Windows 10 64bit.

Any other buyers can clarify if they have this issue? If so I wonder if it's normal?

  • Are you using AMD? I know that some of the ram gets used for the igpu. At least, it does for me

    • Yes, it's AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx 2.10 Ghz

and of the 8 GB Ram installed (5.88 usable)

So it could be the igpu using up that much?

Thanks for reply Xiongmao. How much of the ram does your igpu use? I wonder if it's the same amount or very similar?

      • I think so. I believe the AMD GPU will share memory as required.

My amd is in a server running Debian, uses about 500MB. Mine is only a 2200g, though. It runs headless.

I believe usage will fluctuate but will bottom out. That is to say, it will always share a minimum amount.

I think you can change these settings in the bios.

I had the same query a while back and this is what I got in answer to my question on Reddit:

        • Ok, seems normal to me if the igpu is using 500mb but mine is has 2.12gb that is being used up.
Seems a little excessive to me. So far I haven't done anything except browse on this new laptop.

Thanks for the fast responses. I had a look in bios and couldn't really find anything.

I wonder if any other e595 purchasers with the same setup have the same experience as me?

  • OP - have you spoken to the seller of it? or Lenovo themselves?

  • I went on that chat which relates only to sales, and then tried support chat but unfortunately it's not within their operating times. Now I've just sent them an email ticket and waiting to see if they get back to me.

  • Physical RAM and available memory are two seperate things depending on the OS.

    • Just feels like what's available is off by 2.12 gb. I was also thinking of adding another 8 gb later on.

Any of the Lenovo e495 can give their input of what their Ram shows as available. I would be interested to hear.
