Car Hire in Fiji - Any Recommendations

Hi

Has anyone done this before? What do you recommend and is there anything to look out for?

Is it also safe to drive around?

thanks

Don’t get scratched in the pool, that’s my recommendation did you see that flesh eating bug that guy got last week.

I was going to say “Don’t do it”! as they drive and overtake on those roads like the hounds of hell are on their tail. It’s been a few years since we went but the roads then were full of potholes, people and the occasional cow just merrily popping out on the road in front of you. But I looked up the road death toll and it’s actually slightly LOWER than Australia’s, huh!
Still, the island is pretty small and taxi hire is relatively inexpensive, just make the taxi driver use the meter or negotiate a price before you hop in. Or hire a car and driver for a day or two which is a great way to contribute to the local economy- the people are lovely and what is a relatively small expenditure for us will probably support their family for a month.

    • best option.

I am from Fiji originally but do not drive when I am over there.

If you want to drive just drive. The max speed limit is 80km, roads are fine. Don’t listen to those precious drivers who say it’s full of of potholes and cows FFS country Victorian roads are worse. Also they do have fixed speed cameras as well. So best to stick to the limit. The full service servos are great.

  • We hired a car and drove quite a bit last year. No problems.
Keep to speed limits and go slower if you don't feel comfortable. The major roads were good, smaller roads become less so but just slow down and you will be fine.

Fiji is bigger than you think, so it depends where you intend to drive. For example, Nadi to Suva is about 3.5 hours / 190km. That wouldn't include any stops to see local sites along the way.

My suggestion is to plan where you might want to drive to, and then decide if you want to hire a car or other available options.
