Xiaomi Mi 9 Opinion?

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of buying the Xiaomi Mi 9 but just wanted to get the OzBargain communities opinion on it. Has anyone here tried it?
I like that it has band 28, NFC and wireless charging. Are there any other phones with those same specs that you would recommend over this one? My budget is $500-ish.

Thanks guys.

I recently bought the mi 9 se for about about $440 aud.

    Great phone.

    Fast.

    Does everything it should.

The 9 should be even better, if you have the budget.

    • Does the Mi 9SE haveband 28 and NFC? And how's the battery life on it?
      Thanks for your help.

Yes to both and it easily lasts a day for me. Usually have 30-50% left.

I reckon the 6gb ram makes a HUGE difference to performance.

  • Ordered one through Geekbuying and just waiting for it to arrive. Pretty keen to see how it performs over my old iPhone 6.

  • They have a sale now in the mi story eBay Au

    • Price is okay after 20% voucher and Aus warranty, and if you TRS it or salary package.

I thought it is still cheaper to buy at Toby Deals, with 5% off sitewide.

  • Ordered one during a recent sale at Toby Deals on 17 July, in transit in Sydney today! I am in Melbourne, hopefully, I get it within a couple of days.

Impressed with Toby Deals, to be honest!

    • Does Toby Deals charge GST?

      • I don't think so, the price you see is what you pay. No ABN or GST on the invoice.

  • Compare to Oppo Reno z. I was also looking at mi9 but am now looking at Oppo.
Good luck, you know when you finally buy one you will see it $100 dollars cheaper a week later 😁

  • Xiaomi Mi 9T just announced, much better than Mi 9 since it has NFC and rumored to have Band 28 (since it's releasing in Europe). Might wanna wait if you haven't bought the phone already.

    • *Sorry, Mi 9T Pro.

Doesn't the regular Mi 9 have NFC?
The Mi 9T is cool but I would rather not have a pop up camera.

        • It has NFC but the Mi 9T/9T Pro has a headphone jack. Plus it's got Band 28 which is not common on Xiaomi phones.

Also the pop-up camera is quite safe considering how small the pop-up cam is. It's basically like holding a stick near the end and trying to bend the rest of the end of that stick (which is pretty tough to do), so it's safe to any immediate damages.

But honestly, not much difference between the two. For me headphone jack is a must since i have a lot of 3.5mm headphones lying around, and i don't rely on bluetooth as much as other people do, but other people are different. And both phones are really good, especially the Mi 9 which is superior to the Mi 9T/9T Pro headphone jack excluded.

  • Did you end up buying the Mi9 OP? If so how are you finding it?

I'm currently looking at maybe buying two to replace our Mi5 and Mi6. The amount of phones at a reasonable price with B28 and a IR blaster gets shorter with every upgrade…

    • Yes I ended up buying the Mi9 and am very happy it.

The only minor issues I have with it are:
the advertisements in the stock Mi apps but I have been able to turn most of them off.
Not having an app drawer in the MIUI but I installed Nova Launcher which solved that problem.
The in screen fingerprint scanner isn't always reliable for me.

But overall, I really love the phone. The camera is a massive upgrade over the last two budget phones I had (Umidigi One Pro and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3) and handles multi-tasking and gaming fine.

      • Thanks for replying!

Sounds like you had the same issues as me with the Mi5 and Mi6 - luckily both have received official LineageOS so I haven't run MIUI in a while. Might give it another go.

How do you find the battery?

        • The battery is surprisingly good considering the capacity isn't that big. Watching youtube videos drains the battery a little bit but it charges really quickly so it's not really quick so it balances out.

          • @pat0809: I thought the battery would be fairly standard until I realised it'd be powering a lot more screen. Good to know, thanks!
