Removing Ceiling - Planning for The Future

Hi everybody,

I have a two storey Queenslander style house and plan to rent out the self-contained bottom level. The bottom level amplifies the sound of any vibrations upstairs. I plan to soundproof the two levels using some resilient mounting clips and acoustic insulation in the downstairs ceiling. This requires demolishing the existing ceiling.

My question is, while there is no ceiling is there anything else I should put in that space to help plan for the future? I'll probably never have this opportunity again.

A friend recommended some surround sound speaker wiring for the downstairs lounge room.

Instead of speaker cables (or perhaps, in addition to), I find it more useful to place conduits (and some twine from end to end so you can thread cables). Finish with bullnose on wall or grommet like finish on ceiling.

This way, if there are any new format cables, you don't have to fret. Just pull out the old and put in the new.

Ps. Run the conduit to your modem/router/server also. You probably want a mesh system with a wired backhaul.

Great idea! I just had a thought that maybe I should install some Ethernet ports in one or more of the rooms. If I add conduits in the ceiling for this then I can swap out the ethernet cables for something else in the future.

I just saw your edit. Great minds think alike.

Some Ethernet in the ceiling for a wireless AP. Perhaps some direct Ethernet for entertainment system.

    LED lighting.

    Quad shielded TV outlet

  • For Soundproofing issue

Google - Green Glue, Gyprock Soundboard, Heavy Vinyl membrane, Bradford Insulation
    Renovated my ceiling too
    Whose your builder btw?

    • Thank you. I will.

Edit: We haven't found anybody yet. I was thinking of visiting my local Gyprock trade store to see if they could recommend somebody.

        • For Soundproofing issue
Google - Green Glue, Gyprock Soundboard, Heavy Vinyl membrane, Bradford Insulation

        • Before Installation
          Wired the TV anthena
Wired the Access point cable for the internet router upstairs
          Wired the Power for lighting
Take picture of where the wire is for future reference
          Termite treat the wooden component
Call a telecommunication tech to install NBN ready cable, for my case Cable Internet

        • Google “QLD interior linings Brisbane”
They were my builder, they did the best they could as my previous builder screw up the ceiling soundproofing. And because of the design of my house, there still some feint impact noise. Consider soundproofing upstairs too. Good Luck . Mention my name Mark, they did some Reno early this year for me

        • Thanks. They're only 20 minutes from me. I'll give them a call in the next week or two and mention you.

    • Did you suffer from vibration noise as well? How much did these steps help to reduce the noise and would you do it again if given the choice?

The Resilient Channel and Sound Clip is important.
They isolated the energy transfer from the impact noise.
I will consider soundproofing upstairs floor, and downstairs ceiling to tackle the issue
For upstairs, use a acoustic underlay and then install a carpert

  • Engage with some passive cooling or heating…always good to save money with a bit of planning :(
