Garmin Dezlcam 785 LMT-S or Toyota GPS Navigation System for Camry Ateva 2009?

Hi folks,

Just now I want to take a trip from Melbourne to Darwin with my Camry Ateva 2009 (sounds crazy, right?). The car doesn't have GPS Navigation so I want to get one for the car instead of using Google Map on my iStone.

I don't have enough knowledge in Car GPS Navigation System and with some research, I found that either Garmin Dezlcam 785 LMT-S or Toyota GPS Navigation System is suitable Camry Ateva 2009 but I'm not sure which one is better and to choose. I don't know much about the Toyota GPS Navigation System as I have never used before. Do you have any ideas to share with me? If you have any other suggestions, I'm interested to know.

Cheers,

Just buy a portable. Garmin or whatever has lifetime map updates. Simple

    • I think so too, Spackbace

Google maps also have lifetime maps and its free.

    use your phone.

    • I doubt it works given my circumstance above. Cheers

      • Yes it does. There are dozens of apps both paid free that work completely offline. OsmAnd is one. It's not even 1GB to store all of Australia.

Garmin devices are so outdated. They are very slow and have terrible screens and very limited battery. Unless you've got a street address they really suck finding destinations. Lifetime maps might only be a few years. Don't waste your money.

You can't possibly get lost on sealed roads to Darwin. It's literally a highway the whole way.

Get a paper map for $10, cause it will help you plan tourist stops, fuel stops etc.

  • I found that either Garmin Dezlcam 785 LMT-S or Toyota GPS Navigation System is suitable Camry Ateva 2009

What do you mean by "suitable"?

Any portable GPS system would be "suitable" for your Camry. A portable Tomtom has a simple user interface and can be bought for less than $200

    • Thank you for answering my question. Given my circumstance in which I will take a trip between Melb to Darwin, the two options will give me a lot more information I need on navigation than Google map. That’s why I use the term suitable. Cheers

      • What is so wrong/unusual in the trip between "Melb" and Darwin?

      • What do you want the device to do that Google map doesn't do?

Genuine toyota will cost a mint for map updates… forget that.
Just buy a dedicated nav unit or best option, use an android phone and one of the many free gps apps available.

    • Xywolap, how much does it cost for an update? Regards

      • A new car
        *ba dum tshhh

(Just get a midrange, stand-alone GPS. You'll need your phone for emergencies)

Sorry, why can’t you use your phone?

Putting your phone on a Rock phone holder with the cable plugged in and running Waze would work well.

    • exactly, OP you driving a Camry.

you're not taking some Leyland brothers-esque 4WDing adventure over mountains, through streams and across desert plains.

you're taking one of the 2 paved highways to Darwin. it's basically "head north"

      (sounds crazy, right?).

no, it doesn't sound crazy at all. it's just a long drive. a very very long drive.

      • hi Altomic,

it appears to me that you have that experience. I just want to try at least once in my life to drive across the central land of Australia. it would be great if you can share with me some thoughts.

        Cheers,

Driving in Australia is pretty straight forward. especially when going to Darwin. It literally is "follow the highway".

when I drove around NT I just used a NT road map.

it's literally sticking to the major roads/highways.

you're throwing away money and over complicating things by trying to update your car system.

and your phone will work fine. or get an elcheapo android and use that as a dedicated GPS. but honestly you don't need it.

my tip is - go to an OP shop and buy an Australian road atlas.

          • @altomic: Thank you, Altomic.

I was a bit worry due to the long distance. I thought I will not have access to the internet so my phone gps becomes useless. I thought a portal GPS navigator will help.

After doing my research, as you said, it is quite straightforward to get to NT.

Do you know if there are rest houses along the way?

            Regards,

            • @vchar: your phone GPS does not need internet.

yes, rest houses. towns. hotels/pubs. etc. you'll be right.

    • HI ShortyX, I'm wondering if I will have internet access throughout my trip. :D
