Home Theatre Speakers - What to Look for Buying 2nd Hand. $200 Budget

Hi all, I’m on the look out for some front speakers (tower).

Any advice on what to look for, some good brands/models if I can find them second hand? Or complete overprice crud to avoid.

Budget around $200, mainly for home theatre and I have other speakers covered and a decent amp.

Lots out there for sale but I tend to see the same brand over and over. (JBL, US Audio, Accusound) I am guessing JB/HN specials.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

G.

I'd probably lurk around stereo.net classifieds. But for that budget you'd have to be extremely lucky to get anything good in good condition. Perhaps $200 per speaker would be more realistic.
at low prices people are unlikely to be selling online IMO and making low offers to people is mainly going to annoy them.

    • Lots around that price for brands mentioned above, or people willing to negotiate. Just wondering whether anyone has any opinions on them over more generic brands which are cheaper but with similar specs.

Not after anything in the hifi realm. Playing some music but mostly for big explosions with a bit of volume.

i used to get all my speakers off the hard rubbish collection. After I acquired 4 good sets I had to make a personal rule that a set couldn't come in without something going out or they would have taken over the house.

I've still got a beautiful set of 1970s JBL speakers taken off the kerb that I had to refurb the woofers on but they are excellent. All my others (pioneer, technix, tannoy) had to go when i moved into the apartment.

I've also got a really good Sony amp and a no-name HT multi-channel off the kerb. Both work great.

Jeez I need to come to your neighbourhood for kerbside collection. My area is just full of p1ss stained mattresses and broken cabinets :P

The speakers were out in the 'burbs around Hurstville / Cronulla. I don't collect speakers anymore as I have enough good ones.

The Sony amp was in the red bin outside a unit block in Alexandria with lots of other household goods.

The HT amp was outside an apartment block in Rose Bay.

    • Local ‘green shed’ is a pretty good source (on selling dumped stuff for super cheap prices) and I do check them every now and again. Last decent pair I saw there I regret not picking up.

After a while of use, every speaker is different. Suggest if you buy off gumtree you only do so if they can set them up and play you some of the music you like to test their sound.

    • Not so interested in music (I have a set of decent bookshelf speakers for that in another room) more after something for movies and gaming with a bit of volume and oomph.
