Everydayrewards - Safeway / Woolworths Fuel Card

This deal has been published in the OzBargain store section. I've published an entry here to draw attention to some important difference between using this card and not using this card.

An "Everydayrewards" card is an alternative way to carry Safeway and Woolworths petrol discounts. When you shop, petrol discounts that you "earn" are added to your Everydayrewards card account (if you have one and do what you need to). When you get to an appropriate petrol station, you can swipe your card before paying, to use up a discount. So … no need to carry vouchers.

The problem is, different discounts can have:

  • different expiry dates
  • different discounts per litre

and with the card, you can't choose between which discount to use.

If all your discounts provide the same entitlement, that's great. The card will use up the discount that expires first, each time.

If one of your discounts is for a different amount, then you should be aware the card will choose to use the discount that gives you the greatest per litre saving, first.

A couple of circumstances where the card might act differently to you using vouchers.

ONE - LETTING VOUCHERS EXPIRE

Say you had 2 discounts: one for 10 cents per litre due to expire tomorrow and one for 10.5 cents per litre due to expire in 40 days.

If you use vouchers, you could choose to use the discount that will expire tomorrow.

If you use the card, the 10.5 cent per litre discount would be used, and the other discount would expire tomorrow. Further, you might not realize what had happened, and find out a week later that you have no discounts on your card.

TWO - FILLING UP JUST A LITTLE BIT OF PETROL

Say the price of petrol is high at the moment, and you only want add a few litres of petrol to your car, to see you through to an expected drop in petrol, later in the week. You have 2 vouchers, one for 10 cents per litre, and one for 14 cents per litre, both due to expire in 30 days.

If you use vouchers, you might choose to use the 10 cents per litre voucher now, and save the 14 cents per litre till next week when you want to fill up your whole tank.

The card won't know what you want to do, and will use up the 14 cents per litre discount now, meaning you end up with less discount overall.

The card does provide some convenience, but just letting people know there is a trade off.

Comments

  • BARGAIN

The bargain bit is that, register before 28/06/2008 and they will give you one free 10 cent per litre discount on your card.

  • Another difference - Linked cards

You can link your card to other cards (eg family and friends).

On the plus side, you don't have to keep asking each other, who's got vouchers, and then checking which will expire first etc.

On the downside, you can't hold onto vouchers for yourself etc. From what I can tell, the same rules apply to using up the discounts across all linked accounts. The biggest discount will be used first. Then the earliest of discounts that have the same value etc.

You could get to the petrol station and discover friends and family have used up all the discounts available.

So again, depending on circumstances, the card could provide a lot of convenience, but depending on the activity of all linked users, it may cause some problems for some people …

  • There is a convenience factor with all of this. Keeping bits of receipts in my wallet is a pain.

I suppose that I could exercise my inner paranoiac and worry about linking transactions, but I wont.

Thanks to foundit for working through some of the issues for us all.

    • Yes, my example discounts may be a little nicer than can be found in reality … :)

I do know people who keep the vouchers but forget to put them in the car, or to get vouchers off other family members, so for them, the cards will be very good.

It all depends on one's situation :)

  • Moved to Forums - General Discussion.

    • Thanks Scotty :)

      • Hi Scotty,

just remembered something. Is this a bargain at the moment, because if you sign up before … June 30 I think … they will include a single 10 cents off per litre discount on the card?

(Time limited offer = bargain ?)

  • Foundit

A very good summary of the advantages and disadvantages of this card.

Not being a woolies shopper too much - as it doesn't really fit my bargain role too well - and also outside the card offer area, can you advise - do you always need the card to get your discount. ie do they still offer the vouchers if you don't have the card?

If that is true, then can you work out if having some vouchers which you can use for those splash and dash may work?

    cheers

    • Hi OzPete,

      thanks :)

I applied for the card for a family member. That's how I found out about the card. I'm not sure whether vouchers will continue or not and how it all works yet. When I know more, I'll post :)

      Adios for now

    • ozpete,

When the card is scanned, the fuel voucher part on the receipt won't be printed out, but otherwise the fuel voucher will still be printed out with the receipt. (provided you spent $30)

I found it out when I forgot to scan my Safeway Card the other day.
      Alan

      • Thanks Alan - so I guess one way to cover things is to have a voucher in case, although that wont stop the 14 vs 10 issue

  • Low and behold there is an ad in my local paper for this card - so its now in my area

  • Maybe another way to resolve this issue is to have your card scanned each time you make a purchase that entitles you to a "normal 4 cents" discount.

If you make a purchase that entitles you to a "bigger than normal" discount, then, don't scan your card and get the paper voucher instead :) (So that you can keep it to yourself and use it when you feel like it)

But of course, this wouldn't work if you can only obtain the "bigger than normal" discount by scanning your card…

It's all trial and error and we'll gain more "tactics" through experience :)

  • Hmm … that nickname sounds familiar :)

Just realized, each person can have 2 cards and write in pen on them. One for bigger discounts and one for smaller. Smaller can be shared with family and friends. Bigger discounts can be kept separate and used judiciously to maximize your benefits … :)

    • nice concept - thanks

      • You are very welcome :)
