Consumer / Warranty Rights - Original Retailer has been bought/acquired by another company.

Hi there guys and girls

Just over a year ago I bought some sweet sweet blutooth headphones (Seinnheiser PXC-550s) on a drunk impulse after a traditional pre flight pint or three from JR Duty Free the duty free shop behind the depature gate at the international Perth Airport.

Shortly after it seems JR Duty Free were sold to / acquired by a company called Lotte Duty Free - and a different unrelated duty free retailer (Dufry) took up the space where JR used to be.

My issue started some months back my PXC550s stopped holding a charge and would die once removed from a power source.

Unfortunately the proof of purchase docs have gone missing - and I'm left with a pitiful thermal paper receipt that barely has evidence of print left. My usual trick of taking photos of this documents immediately to preserve soft copies has failed me as I can not find them either.

Seinnheiser has a two year warranty period on the things and said I could walk into the original retailer and just exchange them - but that's not an option. I'd be happy to courier them to Seinnheiser in Sydney but understandably they require proof of purchase if its a warranty claim.

While I can probably pay some money to sort it out - I'm currently awaiting word back from the Lotte to see if they can email me the invoice/receipts.

  • I am curious does the acquiring company have an obligation to me with/without a receipt as they purchased the retailer I bought them?

and does being a duty free retailer differ to any other ordinary retailer in terms of warranty periods, consumer rights and all that?

Other types of proof of purchase include:

    Credit or debit card statement

Ask Sennheiser if the Statement would suffice and send it back Registered and Insured or however they say.

    • So if i buy 2 ipad and some cables and some headphones, the statment will still be legal with no itemised amount.

I've sent earphones back to Sennheiser before without proof of purchase. I called them up, explained situation. They wanted a signed stat dec from me, otherwise it was no hassle. Might be worth a go. Additionally you could always send your faded receipt with it if you can see anything on it that may build your case.

You can thank me later: How to restore thermal paper

Just don’t go in too hard, too fast or you might inflict some burns.

Apparently iodine fuming will recover the text. You just need some iodine crystals and a tupperware container. Both also required for making meth FYI.
