Only diesel engines is a surprising decision these days

  • Now there’s a whole lotta Meh. Kia, SUV and compact don’t fit together and spell exciting for me.

Is it a Kona in a Kia suit?

  • It sure is ugly

    • Kind of gives me a Land Rover vibe

      • An ugly Chinese land rover vibe I suppose

  • Looks like a great car for small families.

Weird statement. It's just another compact petrol driven SUV. There's certainly no lack of choice in that segment!

  • It’s a bit small.

I have been in the auto industry for nearly 30 years and although I cant speak for this particular model, what i can say about kia in general is that we refer to them as mud guards. That is, shiny on top……sh1t underneath. Its what issues they develop 3 to 4 years down the track.
And before anyone chimes in with "but they offer 7 year warranty " unless its a major fault anything else is attributed to wear and tear.

    • What kind of issues are you talking about?

      • Mud sticking to the undercarriage.

    • How do you rate Hyundai?

    • For clarity, how long ago were you a mechanic?

Well i used to be a "grease monkey" in my earlier days with my own business.

      • Will be interesting to know. Probably was around Kia's in early 2000s

        • Issues such as interior trim falling apart and deteriorating/ delaminating under the aussie sun, alot of this is linked to build quality and materials used. noisy transmissions and drive lines to name a few. Yes was a grease monkey long ago however still in the industry in research and development and evaluation. How do i rate Hyundai? Very similar. Both manufacturers share platforms however i rate kia slightly better. Different story 2 years ago. Hyundai dropped the ball in the last few years chasing market share.
At the end of the day you just need to ask yourself, do i pay 18k for a kia which will get you from point a to b with a few issues along the way or 32k for an equivalent vehicle that will offer better build quality and refinement

@gbarlett: Hmmmm as I was recently a car mechanic, I've seen my fair share of Kia's and Hyundai's and have to say the interior holds up better than more "premium" brands, like the classic faded/rubbed off switch's and controls on Audi's and VW. Obviously they aren't as nice feeling, but most people don't care. I own neither a Hyundai or Kia but happily would if I was in the market for something they produced.
