Best Electricity and Gas Plans in Sydney? Slugged with Massive $240 Monthly Gas Bill

So i recently moved from a flat to a house and i have been with agl for a long time, They were offering me a 25% pay on time discount and when i moved they are offering me 27% as i am signing up on gas as well which has a pay on time discoutn of 17%.

Now the problem is i jost got slugged with my first Gas bill and it is very very high at $240 and if payed on time at $205 it says i use about 245.94MJ a day with a cost daily of $8.89. Now i am new to gas but this seems rather very large when gas is supposed to be cheaper than elctricity which i currently use 11.21kwh a day with daily charge of $4.99.

I only use gas for the stove which is run maybe max 1h a day then the hot showers which is around 20 min a day. Other than that we use gas heater as well but only 1-2h a day, its a small portable one with 21mj rating.

is this right? is there a better option? Defintly cutting gas heater off and seeing if the meter is reading way lower or not. Also not sure why electricity price is still massive, same as flat price. Theres nothing extra being run on electricity, same appliances and same lights, fridge, washing etc.

I am currently with AGL and been with them for last 3 years.

Update: I checked and turns out that estimated my consumtion by over 200% now the bill went down from $240 to $73.78 also had a look and they didnt have my concession discount since the move and got them to fix that as well. Still its a bit high as the cost of electric is correct and did not change which instead of paying 350-400 a qaurter it looks like with gas its going to be 600-700 a qarter which is insane.

I'll check on the gas now and see if i can figure it out, if not ill try linking some photos.

Update2: Gas hot water is a BOSCH Professional plus.

Are they your actual meter readings? They could be estimated or even mixed up with someone elses.

    •

Yep was an estimate called and got it reduced from $240 to $73. I still think for 1 month its still a little high so well do some gas meter checks when using gass appliances and when not etc.

Do some meter checks as you suggest to see the true consumption of your gas appliances. Might be the gas hot water as you have not mentioned if it is continuous flow or not.

Very off chance of a leak too.

Note with gas there is usually a fixed supply charge about $80 to $100 a quarter which could be a large part of the bill.

Yeah its about 0.66 cents a day so fir the month bill its should of been max $20 supply charge. Also did meter check and called them and turns out they did an estimate which was 100%+ over what i actually used. Still the price went from 240 to 73 which is good but i think its still a little high for gass,if you have gas can you confirm ?

They might not actually read the meter, rather estimate based on previous months - ie previous tenants. I would be checking the meter now and every month (and take photos) so when you get the next bill you can say to your provider “ok but by my meter checks I’ve only used this much”

  •

How many mJ/day did you use at your last place?

The supply charge will usually be the main component of your bill. Compare that.

Is your gas hot water an instantaneous system? If not, it'll be using gas all day everyday especially in winter.

Had no gas at old place, just electricity. I'll check on gas now and send link to photos if i can.

    •

OK so its a BOSCH Professional Plus, i did some tests and it seems to turn on when the hot water is used and turns off 1 or 2 min after hot water is closed.

As many people in the eBay threads will tell you, 25% off a price-jack is still worse than 0% off a regular deal price. As garetz mentioned earlier, compare the price you're actually paying with other providers in the area

This is something they should be getting rid off - the percentage 'deals' for paying early/on time. It's really just a late fee disguised as a bargain for the consumer, because that bargain price you're getting is just their usual price anyway.

Yep had to verify with them and turns out AGL disccount is on the usage only not on the supply charge which is like nearly half of the bill so instead of 29% discount on the whole bill its only on half the bill which is a complete scam.

      •

How exactly did i make it hard for you? I was the first one to suggest checking if you gas hot water was instantaneous, so hopefully you learnt the differences between them now.

Oh Shit, sorry, when i saw your /Endthread i thought its someone whos not wanting to help and wanted to close my thread, thanks for your help.

Amaysim have the best gas rate when I checked last month (for a single person household). Their electricity isn't so good. So I do gas with Amaysim and electricity with Simply Energy

Amaysim bill monthly with an estimate for 2 months then an actual read in month 3. If you ask them, they will set the estimate months payment to whatever price you want. I pay them $20.
