Source of Cheap Wool for Knitting

Got a knitting machine a while ago and want to play with it but wool from Spotlight and Lincraft is so expensive. Got some very cheap wool from China on ebay but it is flimsy and smells weird. Rather than try a whole bunch of different sellers and take months to receive it only to be disappointed every time, thought I would ask: Does anyone know a good seller for cheap wool that isn't gross, or good quality real wool or wool blend that is only medium expensive rather than outrageous at Spotlight/Lincraft?

P.S. There was no need to change the title - knitting machines don't need special wool (nice for it to come on cones but you can wind balled wool onto cones yourself) and hand knitting is a million times more common. The title change might have discouraged an answer when it could have been useful.

Bendigo Woollen Mills sell wool in 200 gram lots. The factory in Bendigo has a back room which sells clearance stuff. If buying online wait for the sale, usually $10 per 200 gram ball of good quality Australian wool, free shipping over &50 https://www.bendigowoollenmills.com.au/wool-yarn

Some Kmart stores sell yarn. I think it was $3 for 100g.

    • Edit: sorry just realised you wanted pure wool not yarn. Chances are the stuff you got off eBay was yarn if it smelt gross. The Kmart stuff was soft and didn’t smell!

      • Aha confusingly I call all yarn "wool" so it makes it confusing distinguishing real wool from acrylic :-P

Another vote for Bendigo Wollen Mills. Also consider looking for some local machine knitters to help guide you.

I'm not into machine knitting myself but I saw my mum make many friends and get help from those already interested in the hobby.

I used to have a knitting machine but gave it up as they can be a bit fiddly to use. If you aren’t careful it can drop stitches or even dump the whole piece. I prefer to hand knit.

I second looking into the machine knitters clubs they can give you some great tips as well as wool sources.
