Best Option for Sauna or Steam Room in Sydney

Seems like a good, well priced steam is hard to come by in Sydney, but I find them extremely beneficial and would like to know my options.

Price is definitely a factor. Prefer saunas, but a steam room is a close second, as long as they're nice and hot. I'm aware of these places already:

  • Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre: Steam and sauna rooms that aren't nearly hot enough. Access to them and the pools is $15 or so for a casual visit.

  • C-Life Health Club, Belmore: Good steam room and pretty good value IF you also want to use the gym and fitness classes (Yoga/Boxing etc) at around $105 a month or less with long term memberships. I have a gym membership already and don't live that close though, alas.

Any others people know of?

  • I've seen people pour cold water on the temperature sensor in the steam room which results in lots more steam coming out.

    • That trick works on the C-Life steam room but there's no such sensor at Ian Thorpe. The controls are only accessible to one guy who wasn't there when I was, apparently.

  • In case you're interested, there's been studies demonstrating marginal health improvements with an "ice bath" and marginal improvements with a "hot bath".

However, if you really concerned about getting health benefits, a proven benefit is from interchanging from hot-to-cold. You can do this by staying in the sauna for a couple minutes, then going for a swim in the outdoor pool, and keep repeating. Especially after a gym session, this causes your skin to tighten, and your capillaries to work overtime by dilating and constricting, which helps remove built-up toxins and then bring fresh blood/nutrients. It's one of Finland's secret weapons!

I've heard of and seen that in practice, but for me simply hitting the steam room after a workout leaves me feeling incredibly relaxed/de-stressed.

Cheaper and better for you than half a bottle of Jack and achieves the same effect.

      Russia's too.

But there you whack yourself/each other with branches as well to get the blood flowing.

Oh yeah, usually when you exit the sauna you are going directly outside for a walk in the snow, so there is that too.

I really wonder if this is a good thing for people over a certain age.

      • I have a knee I stuffed doing pump classes and found alternating the spa and the plunge pool seemed to help. Would need a definition on what you consider over a certain age though.

There are bathhouses around the CBD, but they're more 'social clubs,' and not for the prudish.

    • Yeah, I was trying to work out how to phrase my request in a PG way for places that aren't at all like this.
