Stars Circle Single Track/Fixie Wheels Wheelset $65 + Delivery

10

I just ordered some of these last week, thought it might have been an error at this price, turns out it's not, and it's just a great bargain on a set of wheels.

Comes with flip-flop hub, which is a bonus if you're thinking of turning an old bike into a single speed which I am. Saves buying a separate hub too!

No idea on the quality of these, would like to hear any comments if people have experience with this brand.

This site hasn't been mentioned on here before and it seems like they sell a lot of gear much cheaper then anywhere else in Australia, I found a number of pretty decent savings!

Always good to give back to the community who gives me bargains all year round!

Cheers.

I've heard that it is real easy to dethread the hub so use a nice wide cog.
I also think that the pair spokes might look pretty but don't distribute tension well so make for a weaker wheel

but for $65 what do you expect?!?

Weaker wheelbuild due to silly spoke pattern isn't a problem - these rims would survive a direct bomb hit. They're like construction girders bent into a circle. Very, very, very heavy.
Seriously, the front wheel alone is listed as 1000g. A half decent road wheelset weighs less than that, including a freehub.
I got a set of conventional spoked Stars fixie wheels for a tongue-in-cheek novelty bike for last year's Melburn Roobaix. With the massive rims, they behave like a flywheel… it takes some work to get them up to speed, but once they're rolling they just roll over/through anything. Like a steamroller. Hilarious amounts of momentum.
I haven't ridden them a whole lot, but they've survived the abuse I've dealt them.
The Quando hubs aren't loved by many on the various forums, but I got another set of the same hubs on my On-One Pompino, which I commute on every day (single-speed… I hate riding fixed on the road). I haven't had any trouble with them in 1200km so far. For a set of cheap single/fixie hubs, they're probably worth the price alone.

Yeah, i haven't heard good things about Stars wheels at all. Someone was selling these wheelsets on ebay for a very similar price last year on Ebay and they came in for a sledging on some of the Aussie bike forums.

That said, bike riders (like me!) tend to be huge snobs and turn their noses down at anything that's not a $10'000 Ultegra-equipped full-carbon credit-card-busting head-turner. If you're just popping down the shops on them I can't see the problem. Not sure they'd be strong enough for a fixed-gear though (especially if you're hipster-braking with your back wheel all the time). Single-speed would be okay though..
