Can Anyone Recommend a Cheap Wi-Fi Security Camera

Hey

I've just moved into a new apartment and we have an undercover car space which is semi-secure

There is a garage door but there is also stairs that anyone can walk down, I've left some stuff in our car space that is somewhat valuabe.

Can anyone reccomend a camera I can record on with night visison, recording, motion sensor, 2 way audio and connect to my phone so I can shout at anyone I see snooping.

Seen loads on eBay for under $50 but no idea which to go for

2 Flaws with cheap wifi security camera:
    1) Wifi can be jammed with a $4 tool found off eBay
    2) Most cheap cameras have an exploitable busybox environment.

    • In regards to your first point, I'm pretty sure the majority of cheap WiFi cameras will record to an SD card onboard the camera. I think this may be an issue for more expensive wireless cameras which record back to a hub/gateway, even those could have storage on the camera as a backup/cache.

      • The jamming issue is only effective if the user is away and wants to view what is happening at home. As with the BusyBox Exploit, the robber can remotely pause or format the SD card remotely as he has shell access.

    • I'm thinking more as a deterrent

A camera does you zero good once the goods are gone if the person who intends to steal them covers their face etc

You'd be better off spending the money on a solid box (toolbox for example) that you could either chain to something or a couple of anchor bolts in the concrete. I'm in a similar situation and have a storage cage, and debated a camera after someone broke in and went through my stuff (nothing stolen that I noticed, but they went through "my life" which was a little unnerving).

I’d tend to agree with this. There is value in being able to actively monitor a space using a camera, however I think there is somewhat of a false sense of security involving recording a potential theft, where police may not be able to actively pursue an investigation, depending on the nature of the crime, where even identifying features of a criminal might not necessarily lead to either prosecution or recovery of items. I’d imagine that deterrents like a very loud alarm, or as you’ve suggested physical barriers might yield better results.

As I’ve suggested though, actively monitoring a site using cameras would be more effective, but obviously means both you need to be able to react immediately and also monitor all the time.

Unfortunately if someone wears a mask, or is otherwise disguised, the camera really only confirms that the crime occurs, but doesn’t necessarily deter the potential criminal.

    • Can't you contact the police? I'd imagine a wifi can get triggered by movement, thereby allowing you to do so pretty quickly.

Ofc it's not instantaneous, but if they are rummaging your things for 10+mins, there's a chance the cops can get there within that time frame

    • Agreed. Even storage cages are being attacked big time in Melbourne right now. If it's valuable or sentimental I would not be storing it in the garage or a storage cage.

  • Do you have a powerpoint there? Can you connect to your wifi at the car space?

    • Damn I thought I did, but no I don't.

Are there any that can be charged?

      • Most are low enough DC voltage that you could get a larger battery and a step converter if you're handy with a soldering iron.

yes,, anyone can recommend a cheap security camera.

  • Ps, op I would not leave anything in your car. Maybe get a safe storage in the car park? Might not be worth it if you are renting only…

  • I have a Wyze cam. Nice little unit. Bought from Amazon. U might want to check this out.

I have used a Cammy penguin indoor camera which was absolutely fantastic but about $15/month for monitoring and cloud storage costs. It sends an email when anyone entered the room and I was able to speak to them whenever, also pan and tilt from the app remotely. Rarely ever a false alarm.

I just put my two cameras on eBay as I now have a full home security setup.

Another one I trialled, a cheap one at $50pa was crap… But I still have one of the two in operation as it is ok and does actively follow people in the room. Just a ton of false alarms.

Then one other option I like very much and have installed as well is the Ring Floodlights. Looks like an ordinary floodlight but for a reasonable annual fee it alerts my phone when someone comes to the door. Picture very clear, can control floodlight and alarm sound, and I can talk to visitors. Good thing is it doesn't look like a camera at all!

      able to speak to them

So how many times have you done this?

What did the say back to you?

    These:

Work well, and there are always quite a few selling them on E-Bay. There is no need to get the accompnying chime as you aren't using the doorbell function, mine switches between back light/standard/mono [night mode] automatically and the microphone can pick up my opening the car door lock from ~ 25 meters away. You can get alerts/view on you phone both over wi-fi and via the app on your phone whilst you are away.
The batteries [3 x 16850] have lost ~ 12% of the charge after 2 months useage, however I charged them up in a Nitecore unit, rather than relying on the inbuilts USb charging.
A small price to pay for the Chinese having constant monitoring cameras in Australian suburbs :-p.

    • How's the battery life? Is the cloud storage free?

      What about the range?

  • My personal experience is that I wouldn’t recommend a cheap Wifi video camera. A couple of years ago I brought two ‘cheap’ ($100 each) cameras from China. One was DOA and the other worked for a while after configuration with an awful configuration utility.

Was advertised as 10 metres Infrared night vision but actually was 10 cms before it eventually failed too.

Spend a bit more and get something that has support from the maker.

  • I've left some stuff in our car space that is somewhat valuabe.

    dont, or get insurance

cameras can be defeated with a hoodie, and doesnt actually stop the thieft

    • The stuff isn't valuable enough for insurance, it is mostly like tennis rackets kayaks surf boards, and other random camping crap. But the tent is worth a few 100 for example if someone was to steal it

      • get a bike lock and pop it through the handles of the rackets.

  • What about this one here:

I'm thinking of buying it. Anyone got comment on this?
