Moving out for The First Time, Help Getting The Best Deal for Electricity and Gas ?

Moving out for the first time, they have these "services" that connect up your gas/electricity/water/internet etc for you, assuming there will be better deals if you know the Gas/Electricity companies - does anybody have a go to service/plan for these?

I am up to speed on shopping for an internet plan but have absolutely no idea about shopping for an electricity and gas service.

Assuming water there is only one company?

Is it worth taking on these services that do it all for you? I am always skeptical of these type of services who just promo the one paying the best commission.

EDIT: Located in VIC - Melbourne

It depends entirely on what state you are in for elec and gas. Try energymadeeasy.gov.au :)

A good option is to look at pay on time discounts for electricity. Not sure about gas.

I've only ever had experience with 'brokers' that bundle it all to get the best deal on a commercial basis, usually they lock you in for at least 2 years or more so if rates change you get stuck paying the contracted rates. Better off doing it yourself imo, gives you freedom to find better deals as they come about.

  • A good start would be to use free comparison websites that figure this out for you, as everyone’s situation is different.

so you're in vic, there's vic government website that helps you get the best rate, but catch is you need to know your usage pattern to take full advantage, but it'll probably right most of the time. Make sure double check with retailer website for update because gov' site may not update rate fully. Most retailer offer sign up bonus also so take that into account. Over longer term, check retailers' offering and those comparison site often to be ahead of the game because retailers keep shuffling their rate so the cheapest one today might not be the same 3 months later. The bottom line is 'loyalty means nothing' nowadays so you have to be brutal, even when you decide to switch current retailer will call and try to match competitor rate so be sure for that.

I am based in Melbourne and have just changed my Gas and electricity tonight.

I Found Tango Energy the cheapest for Electricity

I found Origin Energy Cheapest for Gas.

    Hope this helps you out

One thing to remember with Tango, they've started doing the old trick of jacking up rates beyond their regular offers when your contract runs out. So when they send you a notice in 11 or so months time with new rates, compare them with the ones currently offered on their website to make sure they're not ripping you off.

  • energymadeeasy government website

Wattever compares the most companies / plans and you can setup an alert when somebody is cheaper.

    plus the victorian government one.

Bundling gas plus Elec isn't necessarily cheaper

    don't go on contract

  • AGL aren't the cheapest but are giving away a free google home mini with every VIC online sign up currently, so even if you have them for just 12 months it's worth it to get that. Plus there app is great showing daily usage.
