    Such a lucky kid :)

  • It's been cheaper, but it's a great tablet. Comes with a pen that works quite nicely and you don't have to pay $150 for the pen.

I have the One UI Android 9 update ready, but I didn't install it. I prefer without One UI which is an interface designed to make one handed operation on a smartphone easier. It doesn't make a ton of sense on a tablet. So I'm still on Android 8 with this tab.

  • This tablet is a wonderful experience. The screen is fantastic, the pen works well.

  • Cheaper - $784. Never heard of "becextech" so purchase with caution. Not sure if they are AU Stock.

    • +3

They are grey import with not great reputation. And probably charge lots of postage

I price matched at OW for a Google Pixel XL 2 when it was on sale at becex.

      Give it a go

The Tab S6 has just been announced, which is a huge improvement in almost every respect over the S4. Should be available in a month or so. Given also Samsung's incredible EPP deals on previous items, I would definitely hold off buying the S4 unless it was at a bargain basement price.

It is listed on Samsung's website already. See here for more info. RRP is $1099 for the low-end (6GB memory & 128GB), or $1299 for the same in LTE.

    • That's more expensive than S4 was a year ago. It does have more RAM and storage at base level but that is expected of all electronics as time passes.

Still, I'll keep an eye on prices. If they have a good preorder EPP deal with pack in gift, I might just be tempted to upgrade.

      Wasn't there meant to be a Tab S5? Not 5e, but a full S5.

      • Perhaps the Tab S5 went to the same place as the Note 6 and Windows 9.

  • Tab S6 just got announced for a September release, might see this price for the Tab S4 across the board soon.

    Edit: beaten!

  • Finally newly announced tab s6 will have the current cpu of the flagship phones and not be a generation behind like the tab s4.

Definitely hold off till that is available if you are still set on getting tab s4.

    • Unless like me, you want a headphone jack. That is a deal breaker.

It might sound petty, but isn't BT on plans still a no no? And if I can avoid having things that close (transmitting /receiving) to what's left of my brain, I would.

      • +2

        BT is permitted on Planes.

Seriously no need to worry about the milliwatt output of Non-ionising radiation coming from the WiFi, let alone the BT of a device..
You should be far less worried about non-ionising radiation than you are worried about going for a 10 minute walk to the shops on a winter's day with no sunscreen! (I'm betting that worry level is negligible, yet the risks are far greater!)

        • Thanks, didn't know BT was allowed.

      • argh. Samsung is so confused with their headphone jack policy.

The phones still have it but not the tablets? If anything the tablets would have more space for it than a phone.

They can't seem to decide if they want to save the tech or kill it. They enjoyed the status of being one of the last holdouts of 3.5mm making them popular among audio enthusiasts and they're going to give that up.

    • Is that confirmed? Samsung's spec sheet only says "Octa core".

  • Price has been holding firm as there is no real competition for this high-end Android tablet. We are hoping the real Tab S5 will come soon to force tab S4 price down. Note that S5e is not Tab S5.

    • +1

Not sure of Tab S5 but Tab S6 is due this September.

      • +1

they skipped S5 and called it S6

  • As much as I love this from Android tablet perspective and a beautiful screen for movies, I would not get this because the tablet will most likely not get further updates. The only apple product I get is iPads and that is because of the ecosystem support and updates for 4-5 years

I know many use it only for browsing and netflix, but it is nice to get updates regularly

    • What? Please explain.

      • Samsung ( and other android OEMs for that matter) are very slow to release updates for tablets and they don't provide updates for long - maybe 1-2 major version revisions and that's all.

But iPads are supported for 4-5 years and get frequent updates in between and the latest PadOS is a good progress and makes the tablets more useful.

This tablet has got an update to 9.0 PIE in Australia more than 2 months after it was released in other countries and I don't think we will see Android 10 on this. Android 9.0 Pie itself is almost an year old now btw

        • It came with 8.1 Oreo, so will definitely get two major updates i.e Android 9.0 (rolling now) and Android 10 when gets released.

          • @Smokey010: I'll be happy if that happens , don't get me wrong, just not hopeful of it.

            • @otter-raptor: Happened few weeks ago mate.

        • This has DeX mode which is a useful feature. Android is less dependent on OS updates than iOS. Like when my iPad stops getting updates my browser will not see anymore updates, on Android browser updates are seperate. A lot of the core apps are like this on Android, which means a device can still get lots of software support outside of os updates. OS updates aren’t always a good thing especially on older devices. Downsides could be performance decreases, introduce new bugs that might take ages to rectify, older apps no longer may work on new version without an update by the developers etc. Actually I think 2 major updates is probably about the sweet spot for most android devices. Still get 4-5 years of use out of them. There’s games and apps that unfortunately that won’t run on my iPad because of updates but fortunately still work on my old Android tablet that hasn’t seen OS updates for years.

          • @Ronnnie: My original tab s still works and has been updated using lineageos.

Pretty sure tab s4 will have lineage support also.

          • @Ronnnie: Chrome gets updated on iPad through app store as well.

Performance on iPad increased after ios12 and is generally getting better.

Dex is useful for few of us yes, but not sure of general tablet users

Disclaimer: I'm an Android user and I'm not trying to say you should not get this product, just that there are a few downsides people need to knowmbefore spending big dollars

            • @otter-raptor: Chrome like all browsers on iOS relies on the safari engine. So once your iPad stops getting OS updates the browser won’t be seeing proper support. iOS safari engine is behind Android anyhow, chrome on my Android 7 powered tablet scores 512 on html5 test, while on my iPad Air 2 scores 498.

Performance in iOS 12 is better than 11 on my iPad Air 2, but that was because iOS 11 was terrible. My iPad performance is much worse than the original OS version it shipped with. Really the amount of apps and website reloading is the annoying aspect. The tablet is still fast enough loading up apps and websites.

              • @Ronnnie: I'm yet to reach the stage of no updates, so my experience may deteriorate like yours did, let's see , 3 more years to that i think :)

        • But iPads are supported for 4-5 years and get frequent updates in between and the latest PadOS is a good progress and makes the tablets more useful.

It's an improvement but it's still not there. Their mouse support is an accessory feature that turns your cursor into a giant black circle. Can you plug in your device to the computer and use it as a mass storage device?

I have iPads too, but the reason I gravitate towards Android tabs is because it's open. No artificial restrictions or walled gardens which are not my thing.

This tablet has got an update to 9.0 PIE in Australia more than 2 months after it was released in other countries and I don't think we will see Android 10 on this. Android 9.0 Pie itself is almost an year old now btw

Android 10 is coming next year. That should be the last. I have the 9 update but don't install it because I prefer 8.

There’s games and apps that unfortunately that won’t run on my iPad because of updates but fortunately still work on my old Android tablet that hasn’t seen OS updates for years.

Yeah this. I really hate that Apple have removed 32 bit support after iOS 11. I have some key games that never got updated to 64 bit and I can't run it anymore because I updated my iPad.

Dex is useful for few of us yes, but not sure of general tablet users

This tab is not aimed at general tablet users. There's a reason why flagship Android tabs don't exist outside of whatever Samsung does. The general tab market is dominated by iPad 9.7 and cheap Android tablets from China.

And you know, I just really like that OLED screen which even the $2k iPad Pro does not have.

Disclaimer: I'm an Android user and I'm not trying to say you should not get this product, just that there are a few downsides people need to knowmbefore spending big dollars

Nothing you've said is anything new. Anyone who uses Android (tab or phone) already knows the deal. We accept it because we prefer it over iOS. That is to say the downsides of iOS outweigh the downsides of Android, for me at least. iOS is getting better with iPad OS as a replacement for a laptop, but Dex mode with a mouse is still a closer experience. As long as Apple continues to sell Macbooks and doesn't want their sales cannibalized by iPads, iPad will never quite get there.

          • @lostn: "That is to say the downsides of iOS outweigh the downsides of Android, for me at least."

I think you are in a niche scenario, and that is not wrong . As you said it is a choice made consciously and I'm trying to give my 2 cents nothing more :)

            • @otter-raptor: You're likely right. Power users who want full customizability should definitely be in a minority compared to general tab users.

I just don't like devices that artificially restrict what you can do on them. Doubly so when they've for a while been claiming to be a viable replacement to some other device that they aren't even close to being a substitute for aside from cloud based apps like Netflix and youtube for enjoying your 16:9 movies and TV shows on a 4:3 screen with huge borders.

The other major gripe I have with their OS is the need for content management systems that are also picky about what formats they will accept. Let me put my movies on without transcoding and losing my subtitles and other language tracks, or needing to find some third party solution which then makes my movies only visible to the app that I used to copy it over on. There's a reason why every 3rd party media player has to also build in a file system for uploading files to it.

It deliberately wasn't built for me. Too much hassle and compromise to do what I can do very simply on any other OS.

4-5 years of updates sounds good. But 2 years is the lifetime of a device for me. I will want to upgrade to something shinier long before 4-5 years, so it doesn't bother me. What I get is enough.

              • @lostn: I agree iOS is restrictive in many areas, I use VLC under apps in iTunes to copy movies and it usually works out OK on the iPad, iTunes is a nightmare and hopefully the ios13 with native file manager fixes that crap.

Iam a pro user as well and I use Surface for work and serious applications and use iPad for laid back netflix. wish there is a device that combines both use cases as iPad is not there as a laptop replacement and my Surface is not there as a proper tablet experience.

Who knows maybe Google will make Fuschia like that in the far future :D

                • @otter-raptor: That's why I have my Tab S4.

As an OS it's more "mobile" and responsive than Windows, but it lets me do Windows things more than iPad.

I looked into upgrading to the Tab S6, but I probably won't now unless it's dirt cheap. I don't like the new kickstand, and loss of 3.5mm jack. The kickstand means you can't put it in a case that protects the back cover. If you drop it and it lands on the back it will be unprotected. Also, no camera flash.. wtf?

                  • @lostn: I need full desktop grade MS OFFICE and Chrome browser and odd bits and pieces of legacy software, so surface is the only alternative for me

    • I'm facepalming

  • Bought from Bing Lee last week for $569.20, just arrived yesterday. Happy with it so far. Sure, S6 is coming, but $500 dearer.

    • +1

Yours wasn't 4g though right (I got the same deal as you last week on my wifi one)

      • Yes, correct, wifi only - misread the title

  • link doesn't work for me but seems cheaper here $792.30 but this says unspecified bands

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-SAMSUNG-GALAXY-TAB-S4-…

  • Probably better to wait for the s6 and sign up a plan

    • Yeah I would get the s6. Samsung killed this tablet for me by using a generation older SoC.

  • Tempting to get this and use as a phone* , I rarely call or receive calls anyway, and I have Bluetooth headset…

    • Making calls will be annoying though. You've got to take it out of your bag and it's a bit big to carry around with you everywhere you would take a phone.

Or when you receive a text and want to read it…

If you don't sync it to a smartwatch you can't even tell who is calling you.

      • Sync with an old phone :D
