Kogan nbn or other budget provider

Moving into a new house which has NBN FTP, but wanting a budget month to month provider for now. Thinking of the $65 Kogan NBN bundle which is unlimited data and 50mbps download. I have read reviews and seems to be pretty mixed and runs off of Vodafone like their mobile plans.

Wanting anyone who uses Kogan as their nbn provider or has used them or Vodafone in the past to give me advise on how good it is. Obviously $65 is pretty cheap, and you do get what you pay for, but how is it actually?

And any other recommendations for cheap NBN providers?

In order of most expensive to cheapest:

Aussie broadband $79 a month, no contract no setup, the first month is free with coupon codes
    https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/nbn-plans/.

Superloop $74.95 a month, no contract no setup. the first month is free if you use this coupon
    https://www.superloop.com/

Exetel $65 month, no contract but $79 setup with a wifi modem included.
    https://www.exetel.com.au/broadband/nbn

Tangerine telecom is even cheaper at $59.90 a month for the first 6 months but I personally wouldn't go for it, most scenarios you tend to get what you pay for, don't expect good evening speeds and probably expect poor routing to international servers

Superloop and Aussiebroadband gets good reviews and I've personally used both, I have tried other lower-priced providers and found that frequently underperform. Your mileage will vary though, I've seen people go with MyRepublic and apparently post good evening speeds.

    • Thanks for the reply, will look into these

I've used both AussieBB, Vodafone / Kogan and Superloop.

All are good. If you game or want proper international connectivity, stick to AussieBB or Superloop.

If you basically use Netflix, YouTube or anything that is hosted locally, then Vodafone or Kogan will work fine. I would get full speed to local servers, but it was very very average to overseas.

    • Thanks for the reply. I'm wanting to game online a lot, but I'm actually used to getting crappy 8mbps internet currently, so feel like anything would be an upgrade to it. What was the usual peak speed of Kogan on peak? And when you say very very average, do you know a rough download speed and ping it would be

      • Peak speed would basically be full speed of the plan, at almost all times (locally). As for connections to overseas, I was sitting around 200ms+ to Los Angeles with throughput of around 30-40Mb/s on Vodafone / Kogan, whereas on AussieBB, it's around 160ms and I get the full 95Mb/s to overseas.

Their IPv6 implementation was also completely borked. All data sent to or via Telstra was sent via the US for some reason, even though both I and the server were located in Melbourne. I tried to raise it with support, but they said they didn't care basically.

However, given that most game servers are located in Australia, I think you could get away with Kogan 50/20. It is a good price.

That said, I reverted back to AussieBB 100/40 unlimited, and am happy to pay for the difference. Support is night and day if you have an issue, or need routing to a particular server fixed.

        • whereas on AussieBB, it's around 160ms

I'm not using NBN and I get 40ms gaming on AU servers from Adelaide …

@Diji1: You need to read the whole sentence lol

        • Yeah, agree. You need to make some sacrifices or do some tinkering.

I usually turn off ipv6 as it triggers you logged in from another location on Gmail even though it is the same RSP…

Maybe it's the wider range of ipv6 addresses which are renewed on Kogan because this never happened on Telstra. On kogan's ipv4 it is basically in the 101.101.XXX.XXX - 101.112.XXX.XXX range, or similar. When I had ipv6 turned on I needed to verify from a phone number or tap a two digit code on your phone every time there was a dropout as that changed my ip.

Kogan is good enough for the average consumer though. It's not like it crawls to less than 100KB/sec when visiting international sites. Even speed tests during peak periods to London are quite reasonable. I get around 5mbps to Start.ca's London server from Kogan at 10pm. Not exactly good, but not exactly terrible.

If the OP is coming from 8mbps adsl, then they probably won't notice much difference. If you can pay those extra few dollars a month you will no doubt get a better experience with Aussie or Superloop.

If you are like me, and just upload a lot to Youtube or other locally hosted sites, then it probably doesn't matter who you are with. I'm just glad I don't have to buy those $4.90 kogan sims anymore.

    BELONG $55 MONTH FOR 50/20

    • How great are Belong?

      • MEH THEY ONLY HAVE MINIMUM 30MBPS EVENING SPEED BUT MANY REPORT GETTING JUST UNDER 50/20

      • had it for a few days now, id recommend them. excellent speeds and excellent price

  • Letsbemates are apparently decent, and they have it at $69 per month

  • Spintel, byo router thou.

  • I'm using Kogan NBN FTTP 100/40 right now.

I game on PC and PS4 Pro both being Wired connection, as well as have a Plex media server which i download all my movies and TV shows from Usenet and torrents

Pings always low at around 4 ping and ive never had any problems gaming on it which ive cancelled NBN instantly before for Ping issues.

Usenet doesn't reach max speed, best it gets is about 6MB/s vs's the 11MB/s i got with Aussiebroadband before.

Torrents is a little faster at around 8MB/s on a good torrent which Aussiebroadband also maxed out before.

Steam, Uplay, PSN, and the other twenty places to down load games all download at max speed of around 11MB/s

Kogan NBN has gone down more times than Aussiebroadband which only went down like once the 6 months i was with them but it hasn't gone down for long.

I'm on the first 9 months at $75.90 whioch is a good price, the normal price of $85.90 is too high IMO and i'll leave after 9 months most likely which isn't a hassle for FTTP NBN.

  • Hmmm I'm thinking to also move to kogan nbn from Aussie BB

I have FTTN, and heard Kogan aren't the best with FTTN premieses.

With AussieBB I get around a 10-40 ping on games

I've just signed up to Kogan. Will let you know in a couple of days how the process has gone

      • Get it yet ?

        • +1

Ordered around 6pm and was sent an sms 8am the next day about it being connected. Haven't actually set the router up, will be doing it tonight. Let you know how it goes tomorrow

So far it's been great for the price. I did have to call up to get the router (my own) working correctly, but support was very good.

I'm on the 50mbps plan and I'm getting download speed is roughly 46mbps and upload 20mbps. Seems to be consistent throughout the day even during peak hours. I do however feel like it is a bit slower loading overseas websites but otherwise for the price it's fine. Gaming has had good speeds and ping too.

          • @Wombat22: Are you on FTTN or FTTP or HFC?

Did you try the modem they provided ? I read somewhere the modem they provide doesn't work well with FTTN…?

            • +1

@Danstar: It's not a great chipset if you are at a bit of a distance from the node. The one supplied from Kogan uses a Mediatek chipset.

You really want to get a modem with a Broadcom chipset. Good list of them can be found here:
              https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

That said, it's not completely useless. However you can get better.

  • Would this modem provided by Kogan be better than my Telstra Gateway Max (TG799vac)?

    • +1

No, the TG799vac is well regarded as a good quality modem for FTTN. In fact, many people buy them second hand off eBay or gumtree because of the (relatively) positive results they get from medium to long distances on FTTN.

The Kogan modem can be used as a WiFi access point though (if you have a cabled network running in the house).

      • Yeh, I read the same and picked one up off ebay for $20

I have a few spare modems, but just use the Xiaomi extender thing, although my son is at that age now where he is complaining about the speed he gets in his room (10-20Mbps) compared to the speeds every where else in the house (50-90Mbps).
