Gmail Email Aliases - Do You Guys Use It?

Came across this article: https://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/09/how-to-use-the-infinite-n…

So, basically, if you email is [email protected]. You can simply use [email protected], [email protected], etc. That will create alias.

Do you guys use this? I wonder if this works for Audible and Amazon? That way you don't need the hassle of creating a brand new email account.

Yup, all the time. Especially for www.ozbargain.com.au/competition

I just add a '.' somewhere in my email and it creates an alias. Works for me :)
e.g [email protected] -> [email protected]

    • I didn't know that. That's good to know.
Would be good for annoying real estate agent emails.

Can you also block the alias completely? That way you don't get any future emails on that alias?

No you can't block they are not alias but your email. But You can set filter on your Gmail so all email coming to that with dot will go to bin directly for example. Don't get confuse with outlook, where you can create aliases.

  • How about using this trick to create multiple eBay account? Is it safe? Good so all email promo will come to one inbox.

  • I did this for a Nissan Comp last year. Certainly a neat feature.

Don’t use gmail but I own my own domain so I can do similar using <whatever>@<domain name>.<extension>

In my case the domain name is my surname and the extension is .net. I get my emails directed to one of my real email accounts.

    • That's what I do too. I use namecheap which gives you 100 forwarders with the domain registration. How about you?

The good thing is you can issue a unique address to each business, and so if you start getting spam on one of the emails, you know exactly who it was who sold you out (or got hacked)

      • I use Godaddy. Also 100 forwarding addresses. Helps with spam and easy to remember, and spell.

    • I do the same with a Fastmail email inbox, which has unlimited aliases from your own domain and something like 50 from a list of their domains. I've set it up in Wildcard mode, so that anything that isn't sent to my usual address is delivered to a secondary inbox. One-off email addresses (eg [email protected], [email protected]) are excellent for filing, and particularly useful in working out how an address ends up on a spam list.

I also use subdomains on my one-off emails - @m.mydomain.com (for marketing), @c.mydomain.com (for comp entries or things I know will be crap) and @n.mydomain.com (for newsletters). They have associated rules to auto file in certain folders, unless they contain my mobile/abn/shipping address/the words 'tax invoice'/etc. This also helps cut back on the number of emails that trigger a phone noise & notification.

Yes - use it all the time. For one particular food vendor that was offering a great sign up deal for ordering via their app I literally used a new alias to sign up each lunch time (well the 3 or 4 times I went there).

    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]

A lot of ecommerce vendors are blocking the + though now.

For those where it's blocked (e.g. stan, foxtel now, catch) I use the dot in the middle of the email. So if my email is

    [email protected]

I'm sure at various times I will have used

    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    [email protected]

    etc

you can also use @googlemail.com instead of gmail.com

  • Outlook also has the same feature

  • Nope, I don't use gmail. I do use aliases on my outlook account though, and then set a filter so that emails to each alias go to the folder for that particular alias, keeping everything organised. I do this so that I only need to be logged into one email account, but can still use it as multiple accounts having separate emails for personal/work/business etc.

    • do you also have many aliases for ebay account for example?

  • Hi all, i am searching for an answer on how to reply using the alias email address and found this discussion. the story is i hv used [email protected] to do a review, they ask for a photo. I found out i cant login to upload photo, so can only reply via email which comes up as [email protected] instead of [email protected]. Can the experts on here pls advise. Thanks.
