What Soft/Hard Skills Do You Wish to Achieve in The Short and Long Term?

Hi everyone,

Just want to gain some insight as to whether you all have short and/or long term plans on bettering yourself in terms of soft/hard skills,
I currently work as a Junior Software Engineer, so if people have responses related to that, I would be particularly interested, but I will read any and all of the responses

For those who don't know:
Soft skills: personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.
Hard skills: Hard skills include the specific knowledge and abilities required for success in a job.

Personally, I think improving in public speaking, and time-management would be very beneficial to learn in the short term, and areas such as network security and AI would be particularly interesting hard skills to learn in the long term.

soft skills: better detailing and writing of my idea to express them better on paper. I believe this is better than expressing ideas verbally
Hard skills: drawing and art. Linked to the soft skill, and working in education, having the ability to produce a diagram that makes a lot of sense, or a drawing that expresses an idea would be of great benefit.

I'll assume this was deliberate =P

On paper, not on ozbargain ;)

    • That's really interesting, I find that I can formulate my ideas well on paper, but when it comes to talking about them, I'm a blank book, one of the reasons I put down public speaking for a soft skill I could learn.

      • Can you make an app that can fix me

Soft skills: I'm a pretty decent artist with a pencil, but I'd want to get into Graphics Design and 3D Animations on computers/qwerty-mouse.
Hard skills: I want to open a little workshop for myself to work with wood, metal, and 3D printing. Maybe learn some Python-Linux-Blender too.
Ambition: If money was no object, I would like to design my own products like a phone, laptop, console, car, tricycle, etc etc.
Aspiration: I would like to construct the world's longest man-made river

Soft skill: Learn to deal with idiots better. Don’t let the daily morons I deal with dumb me down to their level. I’m guessing the ability to have more patients and just listen would be a nice skill to hone.

Hard skill: get another trade qualification. Also get certification to work for my local government. The idea of being a council ranger lights my wick. Handing out parking fines to all the arsehole drivers and catching all the good boys and finding their homes.

I'm pretty lucky to say that I don't have to deal with morons in the workplace, but I definitely know what you mean outside of work, its sometimes helpful to remember a saying, when having a conversation with a 'moron', from a distance, you can't tell which one is a moron, and which one isn't. Always helps me stay out of those kinds of conflicts, its just never worth it.

      You a doctor?

Hahah… just realised the auto correct. Now, who is the moron? Me! :D …and someone who makes a spelling error is hardly the level of stupid I have to deal with on a daily basis.

New hard skill: Learn how to correctly proof read stuff I write and not just rely on technology to do it for me.

      • That's why they're so concerned about not letting it happen further!

  • I'm also a Software Engineer, but with a fair amount of experience.
One of the hard skills I'd like to learn eventually is knowledge of Biology and specifically Pathology. My feeling is that there are many aspects of pathology that could be improved dramatically by accurate application of software / big data analysis - so many that even with the current level of international interest, many more qualified hands are needed. As a software engineer this is something you could also contribute to (n.b. I know you're looking for points-of-view rather than personal advice)
It's getting easier and easier to set up your own "wet lab" at home to tinker with things like PCR / Biohacking, and it's hard for me to think of a more meaningful application of the skills I've developed as a Softie.

  • "with other people"

None, then, I'm just naturally awkward and there's no changing that.

    "success in a job"

None, then, none of my goals or skills I am developing or plan to develop are work related.

  • Soft skills - all of them. I love talking and meeting people and have never been shy but I just can't seem to form strong professional relationships. Most of the people I end up getting along with at work turn into friends rather than good colleagues, which can be good but also bad. It's hard for me to be respected as a professional at times because I'm so damn interpersonal and friendly in my approach.

Doesn't ewally bother me though. Comfortable with who I am.
