    This doesn't have the inputs necessary for actual atmos. It simple knows how to handle the format (useful if you want to avoid Plex transcoding or other potential format mishaps)

    You need 7.1 channels minimum (5.1 in normal surround, with 2 extra "height" channels) for Atmos.

    This will do 3.1.2, but you'll be missing the "rear" surrounds in favor of having the 'height' channel.

    Don't buy if you want Atmos or DTS:X.

    Setting this up in height configuration will leave out rear channels, which are more important than height.

        Both are more or less the same feature set. I'm more of a Yamaha guy myself so I'd go with that.

        Neither will do anything resembling real Atmos or DTS:X though. Need a 7.1 or higher receiver for that.

                @ozizoy: Oddly enough the unit listed on ebay for the Yamaha looks different than that on their website You may want to confirm this. The front looks like the 485 though the rear image looks like the 685.
                Edit: Looking closely, note the usb/headphone ports are switched on each model. The first and rear image look like the V685, whereas the middle 3 pictures look like the V485. Note the usb port changes places.

      It's not real Atmos!! This is misleading. As has already been mentioned, 'choosing' to remove rear speaker channels so you can have the Atmos working is a pathetic option that no one would ever pick. Hence its a basic 5.1 setup that can process Atmos… that's all.

      And it's NOT real 130w per channel. Not at a full 1% of THD!! It would sound crap! Any half decent amp (and I'm not talking thousands of dollars) should have THD% well below 1%. THD = Total Harmonic Distortion. If your amp is distorting the sound by 1%, it's junk.

      I don't have a super dooper expensive surround amp (Yamaha RXV1900… 10 years old), but it's 130w RMS per channel IS REAL! THD at 130w is 0.04%…. and would kick the crap out of the Pioneer on offer here. (Take careful note of that decimal point folks. It's not 0.4…. it's 0.04!) 1% THD in Pioneer amp beyond crap.

      Pioneer are killing their rep with this one. Leave this one on the shelf.

            @UFO: To top it off the 130w per channel style ratings are 1 channel driven at something like 1khz as you said with HUGE distortion. They can't drive 5 (or more) channels at 130w either… not to mention their pissy little power supplys can't handle it… so much false advertising.

            A quality amp will rate at 20hz-20,000khz - 0.01% THD or something, my DLS Ultimates in my car previously were even better.

                @UFO: I'd be surprised if you can hear the difference between a 1% or a 0.04% THD.

                You can't really compare 1 amp to another as they have different audio processing and components etc. So anything you hear between a 1% amp and 0.04% could be due to the other thousands of variables within the components used.

                Most people unless trained will likely be unable to hear the differences.

                Unless you are a self proclaimed audiophile then for most people especially just a regular home theatre would be fine with 1% thd.

                Probably better to invest in better speakers (yes they add to the THD too) than to invest in better amps. But just need to balance it out as the amp may also bottleneck the system.

                Overall speakers rarely change so a good pair of speakers could last you 10years or more, which would justify a splurge. Where as amps usually change every 2-3years with addition of new codecs and tech.

                Sort of the same concept with IT techos preferring to split their modem and router into 2 devices. The modem being rarely changing and the router changing more often due to new wireless tech being released.

                  @lplau: Mate, you most certainly can. There's a very noticeable difference in music that has faint or even silent sections. Classical first comes to mind, but even decent recordings in softer modern music and you can notice it. You need good speakers (good doesn't always mean super expensive), but the difference between 1% and 0.1% is noticeable. The difference between 1% and .04% is huge.

                  It's not placebo either. Self proclaimed or not it can definitely be heard if you know what you're listening to.
                  I have an old two channel Yamaha (AX1070) that's set up in the bedroom. That's my pride and joy… had it for about 25 years.
                  THD is better again (0.007%). It's 2 channel perfection. It's paired with an OPPO single cd player and two Energy speakers. That's it. No tuner, no surround, just pure two channel audio. And nothing I've heard since sounds better.

                  Whilst I know THD isn't the end all be all when it comes to audio, its a damn good indicator on the type of components used within. There's no faking/processing a pure audio signal. And the louder it gets, the more noticeable it becomes.

                  I like my RXV1900. For surround sound it doesn't need to be pure audio fidelity when it comes to THD or anything else in order for it to sound great. But it still has to be good. And 1% THD is NOT good.

                  I disagree completely with changing amps every 2-3 years. I understand new tech coming out every now and again is nice to have, but chasing newer codecs and extra HMDI inputs and outputs etc isn't what its about in my opinion.

                  Horses for courses. But the pure audio clarity out of my old Japanese Yamaha amp kicks the living crap out of my newer Yamaha amp, and most other 'hi spec' newer amps. It doesn't have HMDI, it doesn't have ATMOS, but not all music was made in the last 5 years. Think of all music you've ever listened to. Ask yourself when it was made, and the technology back then. All you can do is get that source material amplified and driven through the speakers with as little distortion as possible.

                  A new codec or 7.1 speakers isn't going to help you get every little bit out of that source if the processing involved soils the source so much its over processed and muted.

                  Sorry for the long reply. Just really like my music.

                  I enjoyed the linked article btw. Completely agree. THD certainly isn't everything. But its certainly something :).

    Not sure why so many are confused about this, definitely not neg worthy. 3.1.2 is a legit atmos setup option.

    Is it recommended? Probably not. using those 2 channels for surround speakers would be much better for a home theatre.

        The surround sound only works with AC3 audio not with newer audio formats such as AAC etc. Only way around is I believe is to use software to convert files from AC3 to other formats.

          That's and audio format issue not necessarily a source issue. The speakers will connect to any receiver, so perhaps the samsung 'receiver' that comes with the system can only play certain audio formats.

            @cornbeef: yes exactly, its the samsung receiver that is the problem as it does not support the newer audio codecs.

            The receiver however has a a small wi-fi adaptor dongle that slips into the back of the receiver so it connects with the wireless transmitter and rear speakers. If I change the receiver I'm not sure how to connect to the wireless transmitter and rear wireless speakers. Any ideas?

              @Alex10: Yeah it looks like that TX wireless card connection is proprietary, and you won't find that connection on another receiver. If you went for a new receiver then you'd have to consider running cables.

              Depending on what your aim is (i.e. playing/streaming a wider range of music) you have aux and hdmi ports on the back of your samsung. Have you considered using a chromecast or the like?

                @cornbeef: I have a Chromecast that I use for other things. I use the home theatre surround for movies etc, I just need to find movies with audio codec AC3 if i want proper surround sound to work. Other option is to convert audio codec from movie file to AC3 using software. Other option is to watch the movie without proper surround sound. Looks like one day in the future I'll upgrade receiver and speakers when there's a crazy good ozbargain special. Until then i'm happy to wait.

    Hi guys!

    I need a suggestion: at the moment I have an old Sony AV receiver 7.2 system (but set up as a 5.1), unfortunately it doesn’t have HDMI ARC (only standard HDMI) and no support for Atmos or DTS:X. In addition to that it can’t pick up the audio from my Nintendo Switch. I just got a new LG Nano cell led Tv with support to Dolby Atmos. Do you think this system would enhance in any way my experience? Do you know if it can decode the audio format of my Nintendo Switch?

      If you want, Dolby Atmos set-up then looks for another model with 7.2 channel Dolby Atmos-enabled. Yamaha Rx v585 is good for budget setup.
