Groupon cancelling purchase after using Cashrewards

Hi all, I purchased a hotel deal for Bali which was listed for $3839. I went with it because cashrewards had a 15% cashback and I also used a $100 voucher from their "ASIASALE" code.

I got a receipt from them after i purchased and cashrewards confirmed my $560.82 cash back.

I then get an email from them today to say "We’re sorry, but we were unable to process your order for Seven Nights, Ocean View Suite, Two Adults and Two Children. We kindly request you try placing your order again using a different payment method, such as Paypal or an alternative debit/credit card" as if my payment bounced.

The money had actually come out and then they refunded it. I emailed them querying it and I got the response " Unfortunately due to a technical issue you were unable to make this purchase, please accept our apologies. We can confirm you have not been charged for this transaction. We kindly invite you to make the purchase again in order to complete your order by clicking the above link or visiting the Groupon website directly.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused, this is an isolated incident and we will endeavor to ensure it does not happen again.

Now cashrewards is 5% today…go figure……smells off to me.

Im not happy !!

  • If we are going to trust Groupon, and trust that it was just a technical error and due to that technical error you're out of pocket, they really should honor the price prior to their technical error occurring.

    Is that in their T&C's? No. Are they legally obligated? Probably not. Is it unfortunate that they will be out of pocket due to having to cover the cashrewards 15%? Yep. That's just good business practice for mine.

    • I guess the issue is that (I presume) the Groupon price is still the saem, its just the cashrewards cashback that has changed back to the default.
      Perhaps contact cashrewards & see if they will increase the cashback for you considering the circumstances, otherwise wait & see if they have another promotion (hoping the accom price doesn't change).

  • This might constitute misleading and deceptive conduct - in that it was misleading as to price and availability.
    It may also be the case that the contract was completed on them deducting the money.
    However, what are you going to do about it?

  • So it was Groupon who contacted you? Nothing Cashrewards can do about that if the merchant rejects your payment.

    No different to having a rewards credit card. You wouldn't blame the card for it.

    • it was groupon who contacted me. They took my payment, then refunded it.

        • yes payment came out of the account, then they refunded, first saying there was a problem with my payment and to use a different card, then said it was a once off technical error

          • @robwa: There's a difference between a reversal and a refund.

            In any event your situation involves a purchase via a merchant and vendor relationship with a third party cashback provider on the side. Rock and a hard place.

            I assume Groupon's price is still the same? That'll be their argument.

            Groupon will blame the vendor for cancelling the deal, or blame their payment provider (or yours).

            Cashrewards will say they didn't reverse the transaction. That'll be their argument.
