From the website: Hyper Light Drifter:

Echoes of a dark and violent past resonate throughout a savage land, steeped in treasure and blood. Hyper Light Drifter is an action adventure RPG in the vein of the best 16bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.

From the website: Mutant Year Zero:

EXPLORE A POST-HUMAN EARTH
From a team including former designers of HITMAN and PAYDAY comes Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, a tactical game that combines the turn-based combat of XCOM with real-time stealth and exploration of a post-human world reclaimed by nature… and Mutants.
Of course the world ends.
Now it’s over and the Earth is still. Nature has invaded ruined cities. Wind sweeps through empty streets, turned into graveyards.
The humans are all gone. Scavenging through the remains ofcivilization are the Mutants, deformed humanoids and animals alike, searching for salvation or just something to eat. To survive, you and your companions must venture out to explore the Zone.
Then again, maybe it’s all bullshit.

TACTICAL COMBAT
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is the ultimate fix for your tactical strategy addiction. Dive into a deep, turn-based, tactical combat system inspired by the XCOM games.

EXPLORE A POST-HUMAN EARTH
Journey through a post-human world of abandoned cities, crumbling highways, and overgrown countryside. Check back at the Ark, a neon-bathed oasisof ill repute and questionable characters, to restock your supplies and plan out your next adventure.

CONTROL A TEAM OF MUTANTS
A duck with an attitude problem and a boar with anger issues; these aren’t your typical heroes. Get to know Dux, Bormin, Selma, and many other characters each with their own unique personality and deranged perspective on the world and their situation.
MASTER THE STEALTHY APPROACH
Sneak through shadows to avoid conflict or to catch enemies unaware. Real-time stealth allows you full control of approach: sneak into an enemy camp, position the team of Mutants to your advantage, and gain the element of surprise.

UNLOCK MUTATIONS
Unlock new mutations and abilities for your Mutants, such as Selma’s grasping vines, Bormin’s Charge, and Dux‘ uncanny ability to sneak into a camp full of enemies unnoticed, despite being a 4-foot tall walking, talking duck with a crossbow.

DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT
Use the environment to your advantage. Stay out of floodlights, hide from line of sight, or just blast down fully destructible walls and buildings and wreak utter havoc.

LOOT, LOOT EVERYWHERE
From makeshift slingshots to high-powered rifles and top hats to police vests, make sure you equip your Mutants for the dangers ahead. Nothing says post-human quite like a mutated boar in spiked metal armor charging at you with a blunderbuss in his hands.

Enjoy!

Gnog! Finally, a game that my 7 year old laptop can actually play haha

Mutant Year Zero is really cool, the voice acting, characters and world are really awesome. I'm not sure if they changed it since release but at times there's a huge difficulty spike. As someone who doesn't play these games often it was really jarring and caused me to stop playing entirely. Otherwise, awesome game.

Denuvo was removed from Mutant Year Zero since launch also, the performance change was 100% noticeable.

      • +6

I mean that has nothing to do with what I said but alright

        • +4

Was just adding onto your recommendation and praise..
People may have seen Denuvo a year or so ago and written it off originally.

    • Mutant Year Zero has been heavily influenced by XCOM which also gives you huge difficulty spikes, the odds are always stacked against you in this style of game and more often than not you will wipe out on your runs.

So is this Epic store competing with steam? I hear it’s causing mass chaos in the pc community?

    • +3

      Yeah, nah.

    • -3

If by competing you mean paying over the odds for exclusives with their fortnite money then yes.
EGS is a trash fire of a launcher and is missing what should be the baseline of features.
The free games are just a con to try to get people to use the service.

Don't take the bait Lysander… we don't want to see you in the penalty box again.

[edit] Says "coming soon" when I click the link!? Expired?

        • they arent available yet

        • +3

In seven days I am afraid. You will have to have a bit more patience.
Not taking the bait but thanks for pointing it out and reminding me.

Love the downvotes from fanboys that can't see the forest for the trees.

        "I got free games."

"Yeah but I have cloud saves, a ridiculous amount of games to choose from, compatibility across platforms, support for controllers, a search box on the store and a million other things. Oh and Valve has integrity and doesn't pay for exclusivity while trying to fragment the gaming community further."

        • +1

Yeah Valve fanboys can be a bit blind sometimes, easy to get attached to a monopoly though when you have all your eggs in the one basket. I have games over UPlay, Origin, GOG, Humble Store, MS Store, Twitch, etc. so it’s easy to avoid the narrow viewpoint. I’m guessing if Epic hadn’t paid for some exclusives that nobody would be making a big deal of it.

          • +2

@Agret: Who doesn't have Uplay and Origin too. At least they also have the features I mentioned. Because after a monopoly has existed for well over a decade and have brought forth all these features any new competitor has no reason to not have them from the get-go.

Wow, Mutant Year Zero is excellent. Looks like a good week!

Had my eye on Mutant Year Zero for a while on PS4. Happy enough to take the PC version for free instead!

Hyper Light Drifter I bought and just couldn't get into. I know a lot of other people seem to love it, but it just did nothing for me. But still, if you haven't given it a go, you're not risking too much by trying it for $0.

    • +2

Mutant Year Zero is great and I share the exact same sentiments over Hyper Light Drifter just didn't drag me into it for some reason.

  • +1

My not so epic library now have 6 games yay.

  • +6

Thanks for these posts Lysander, much appreciated!

    • +7

You are welcome - I am happy you like and enjoy them.

This weekly free games are such a joy when I get the reminder free game available. Lysander makes it so easy.

I should be able to subscribe to Lysander posts rather than epic game store haha

  • great freebies, always nice to have free games on a never-launched game launcher though

  • I'm up to my neck in XCOM at the moment, on my new nicer widescreen gaming monitor and new desktop build…. wanted Phoneix Point but this Mutant game might be a good in-between option.

  • Will this work on Ubuntu?

    • Nope :)

  • Such a shame that Epic don't supply a Linux version of Hyper Light Drifter like Steam does…

  • Game available now. Thanks OP

I keep getting 404 page not found when I try to click on 'go to deal' here or through the store in the actual epic launcher. Anyone else?

EDIT: okay so searching for the game manually and clicking "get" is the work around for Mutant Year Zero. It seems there's an issue with Hyper Light Drifter not coming up.

  • Page not found…

  • But…Steam.

    • Steam links provided for the user reviews, hit the EGS links for the free games.

      • I just mean I want all my games in one place - I was being a silly, silly sausage.

        • Buy all your games in one place, and take advantage of these giveaways. Best of both worlds. Also for all these game giveaways, you can launch them without launcher epic games launcher. Just open them via their game.exe files instead of the provided shortcuts. Or create shortcuts from the .exe

Then you don't have to use epic's terrible store.

The game is free dude. I'm willing to install yet another launcher to play a free game, even if the launcher is shit.
