Accidentally getting a better product

Bought a pair of AirPods as a gift for someone.

Bought the ones with standard charging case, did click and collect.
After gifting them and them being worn, I realised they’d given me the more expensive ones which come with a wireless charging case.

In this situation, is there anything the retailer could actually do? They don’t accept returns on worn headphones due to hygiene so there’d be no point exchanging them and I wouldn’t be prepared to pay the difference in price.

Would they just take the loss? Anyone else been in a similar scenario? Usually it’s accidentally getting a product of lesser quality.

Cheers

If you've received a product of higher value, inform them. In this case, they can take it back if they wanted to, and you should afford them that option but they cannot resell. I doubt they will take it back and they cannot charge you more.

If you've received an item of lower value, it is on you to ensure the product is correct before using the item (if possible) especially if the item is non returnable. You should get a refund for the difference. If there was no way to confirm the correct product without using it, then you have every right to demand an exchange for the correct product.

Both parties have accountability in both scenarios.

    • Good reply.

A consideration for smaller value items - the swings and roundabouts will balance out so don't worry about them.

    • I agree, good reply, very good information
      Thanks!

      • Yes, let them know.
Say it was a gift and the recipient was happy. Ask them if they would like it back?

There's a 99% probability the seller is going to Thank You for letting them know and tell you to keep it/enjoy.
If the seller says "oops" and asks for it back (1% chance), then let them know that you do not have the money to post it, so ask them to provide it. But let them know you would need the v1.0 AirPods (Brand New) immediately as it is a present. And apologise that the v2.0 has been soiled/used by the person it was gifted to. After saying this, the seller will rethink their position, and say Thank You and will ask you to keep it (99% probability). If they insist for the return, comply with them, and it will be a hassle for both parties.

But at least you would've done the right thing and not actually lost anything, whereas the seller would lose a v2.0 as being opened/used and unsanitary to sell.

In reality I think most people if they received a higher value product would stay quiet about it and say nothing.

  • Did click n collect from dick smith for the wifi kindle paperwhite, they gave me the wifi+3G version, didn't realize till a week or two after using it…

depends on whether you're a goody two shoes morally and ethically superior do-gooder

    …or a true ozbargainer.

I was at a school fair on Sunday, there was a beer tent yay! Ordered a porter which was supposed to cost $12, she charged me $8 which was the lager price. Winning!
Ok, not very Ozbargain of me ordering a $12 beer I know.

Also be mindful that if the product you receive doesn't match what's listed on the receipt it will potentially cause issues if you need to claim warranty or need to take the product back to the store.

      ^ This.

I've seen someone go through one hell of a battle because they accidentally received a 7.5kg washing machine from a retailer instead of the 6.5kg model, kept quiet, and but then needed to log a service call under warranty a year later.

If it was an individual person selling something privately on Gumtree or ebay & they made a mistake, then I would get in touch with them.

Otherwise, if it was a business then there's no point. At least half, if not more, of the selling price is usually the retailer's margin. Even after sending you the more expensive version, the retailer would have made some money.

Secondly, given the volumes that the typical large retailer deals with, your getting the more expensive version will just be a rounding error in their accounts. I mean, I doubt very much that Gerry Harvey is going to wind-up homeless on the streets, begging for loose change, just because one of his customers is accidentally given a more expensive pair of AirPods with the wireless charging case.

      Nah.

Yes, Mrs Kerrigan would not have married this guy.
