Cost of Seeing a Dietician?

So my doctor is recommending me seeing a dietician to help manage my type 2 diabetes and general health.

He is putting me on some scheme which allows me up to 5 visits that gain some rebate basically Medicare with some out of pocket.

I have no idea how much these will be and doctor was kind of vague also.

How much have you paid or do you pay for a dietician roughly and do you know any good ones maybe that bulk bill in the western Sydney region?

Atm he is recommending me someone that can come locally to his practice once a week but there will be some out of pocket then Medicare rebate.

Tbh he is sometimes not the best doctor when choosing other health professionals but he is my first so I may change in future if things get stupid expensive or he gives more pricey recommendations.

Call/Text the dietician your doctor recommended and ask what their fees are and what the Medicare rebate is for the visit is.
Or google their name and see if they have a website and what fees they charge.

Also if you have a healthcare/pension card do they have a discount for that? Sometimes they do even though they don't actually have to supply a discount eg they don't get more medicare bulk bill rebates out of it. No harm in just asking. :)

    • I think I might do that and get in touch with the dietitian and ask them the questions directly.

  • As a former weight loss consultant I use to see many clients go to Dieticians some with good results some it didnt do much good at all

All the dietician is going to to is tell you about your meal planning, about calories etc

Seems you have the 5x health plan, forget the name the Govt calls it now, they changed the name recently where you get 5 free visits however there could be a gap fee with some .

Call or email the dietician he has referred you too and ask if there is a gap fee

    Dietician in the west

    Do you have diabetes ?

Blacktown public hospital,Liverpool public hospital,Campbpelltown hospital free, ask your doctor to refer you to a hospital dietician

    • I have type 2 diabetes.

You reckon a hospital dietician is best?

The one I am being to referred to jumps around from a few different practices by the sounds of it I don't want to name any names but if you want I can discuss this with you in confidence to not name anybody in a public forum.

    • Hi mate

Just in relation to the last sentence you said.

Why would a hospital dietician be better then a private dietician?

      Am just curious..

      Cheers

  • If you have type 2 diabetes you are entitled to see the dietician at your local diabetes clinic for free

Are yiu not registered with National diabetes ?you must have a card because you would get major discounts on blood testing strips ?

Dont you go to your local diabetes clinic at your public hospital every 3 months?
    They check eyes feet

They refer you to the hospital dietician

Find your local public hospital, ring and ask them if they have a diabetes outpatient clinic ,big hospitals in the West do

Ask yiur doctor for a referral to see them,

Not sure where in the West you are but Blacktown Hospital has a large public diabetes clinic

    • I am near Katoomba Blue Mountains currently snowing now.

I just sent off my registration form scanned to NDSS this morning got it certified by my GP yesterday.

I think the nearest hospital to me is the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital though not sure how big of a hospital it is but it is the nearest for sure about 30 min walk from my house.

I think my GP will be referring me to somebody there or someone that can come to the practice as he said that the nurses in the practice can do the feet check.. as for eyes not sure but there is a local optometrist in the area where I got my glasses from also in same suburb Katoomba.

Will be seeing my GP again next week so will probably see how it goes then.

But definitely will be getting an appointment with a dietitian soonish.

  • Why not contact the Dieticians Association of Australia (https://daa.asn.au/)?

My wife is a dietician and a member. The requirements to enter and maintain membership put equivalent professional organisations (eg engineers, accountants etc) in the shade.

  • I recommend you take the opportunity to learn as much as you can about diets that help your condition and general health. Start by investigating: whole food, plant based. You don't have to go whole turkey, but try to shift to it a bit and see how your condition/health goes and then go from there.

Whole turkey? I'll go on that diet thanks

Went with a relative to a dietitian in a public hospital, it was pretty much useless.

I'd start by googling keto, intermittent fasting, dr jason fung.

In a nutshell, eat whole unprocessed foods.

    • I know most of it will be useless but I am hoping it will be enough to motivate me to fully commit to a whole food plant based unprocessed diet as I do tend to stray from time to time to fried temptations and bad carbs.

This is kind of like a force of my hand kind of deal and also doctor recommends it so kind of have to do it anyways and will look good overall and get him out of my hair for a bit until the next problem we will have to tackle which will probably be mental health and psychology.

Just going through the motions but I think I will benefit a bit from some of the dietitian advice even though most will be a chore.

I practice most of the advice said here but the Dr Jason Fung is new to me so there are some gaps in my knowledge atm and I found out the gap or out of pocket expenses might not be too much and I see it as a good investment in my health and future so all is not lost.

  • FWIW. I feel qualified tho answer this question as i have dealt with CFRD which is like
T1 diabetes (complete insulin resistance) for over 15 years now. I have also had the longest line of dieticians you can imagine through the public healthcare system. What i can confidently and emphatically stress is that none of them are worth their salt. They regurgitate redundent dietary guidelines from 70's era science that has been disproven and that props up the pharmaceutical and big agricultural industries. The national body (ADA) continues to lie through its teeth and as far as im concerned their guidanxe constitutes a crime against humanity. Yes…thats heavy but its the truth from my experience and perspective with wha ive gone through before educating myself. Switching to a ketogenic lifestyle, changing my relationship with food… reducing my dependence on insulin by over 95% ans prospering healthwise ever since.

    • Do you feel that medication such as Jardiamet is useful or hurtful over the long haul to your body?

My biggest fear is reading about how all the stuff I am doing now diet/medication wise was wrong and I just effed up my body even more.

That is my biggest fear so hearing from others like yourself who have years of experience over me is great for my conscience and mental health.

The dietitian at this point is mostly just a reminder and motivation for me to stop eating junk food and seriously looking after my health more even though I feel like the endorphins and happiness I get from eating more freely outweighs the strict regime of eating healthy and properly but that is another topic for discussion for another time as who knows who is right in that field of thought.

Just for 1 month mate. Stick to eating nothing other than Meat, Eggs, butter, green leafy vege tables, macadamia nuts and anythi g on the green list for ketogenic diet… Google it. Its important you get enough fat in as that will fill you up.. you will only need to eat twice a day you'll find. Do it for a month then have a follow up blood panel. I'd be staggered if you didn't see insane results. Namely your hba1c (probably the most important measure) will be sunstantially reduced. Make sure you Are checking your blood sugars often. .. you won't need anywhere near as much insulin as your carb intake will be low.. you may not even need insulin..

Of course this is my experience and please do your own research…i can't stipulate that enough

  • Why dont you just exercise ?
    Walk walk walk

    • It's a mental health issue thing.

      • Then ask the doctor to see a Psychologist under the mental health care plan.

Get your life back on track , start exercising, you will feel better
