Faulty Washing Machine Purchased through eBay Store

Hi all,

We purchased a top loader washing machine through a large eBay store in April this year. It was under $350, so not an expensive machine.

The machine has started making loud squeaking noises when it agitates, and the spin is also very noisy (as if there is a loose part clanging around).

The seller has requested we return the machine to be inspected, and has asked me to arrange return shipping.

Do I need to pay for the return? Or should the seller pay? Obviously if the fault is due to something we've done (unlikely), I'm happy to pay for it, but it's not going to be cheap to return a large washing machine.

Ideally we'd like to return the unit for a refund as it doesn't have a delicate wash (as advertised) and has bent the underwire in multiple bras as well as ripped small holes in a set of new sheets :( the spin is just too rough and you can't control the spin speed unfortunately.

Please let me know your thoughts :)

  • Who is the seller?
    Can you link the listing?

    • This is the new listing:

The old listing stated it had a delicate wash (I have screenshots).

Mytopia have been great so far. The hoses leaked and they gave me a partial refund to get a new hose. Still leaked, but managed to use some plumbers tape and it seems to be fine now.

Hmm seems like a sus seller in my opinion.

Sounds like maybe a bearing in the top or spin motor. But that's just a guess.

    Returning the product

You are entitled to return a product if you believe that there is a problem. You are generally responsible for returning the product if it can be posted or easily returned. You are entitled to recover reasonable postage or transportation costs from the business if the product is confirmed to have a problem, so keep your receipts.

When a product is too large, too heavy or too difficult to remove, the business is responsible for paying the shipping costs or collecting the product within a reasonable time of being notified of the problem. Examples include:

    a wide screen TV
    a bed
an extension ladder stuck in the extended position
a product that has been subsequently installed, like a stove or a dishwasher.

You do not have to return products in the original packaging in order to get a refund.

If the product is found not to have a problem, you may be required to pay the transport or inspection costs. An estimate of these costs should be provided to you before the product is collected, and the costs must not be inflated in an attempt to deter you from pursuing your claims.

    • OP's washing machine is about 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m and weighs about 30kgs.

      • For a normal person without some sort of account with a courier, I can easily see the return shipping costing more than the price of the machine. Not to mention you would need to package it securely, probably on a pallet.

Mytopia returns policy does not limit or restrict your statutory rights under Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to return an item if you believe that there is a problem. You are generally responsible for returning the item if it can be posted or easily returned i.e dropped off. For items collected from our warehouse, it is generally the buyer's responsibility to return the item for a warranty claim (exceptions apply). You are entitled to recover reasonable postage or transportation costs if the product is confirmed to have a problem and is eligible for warranty, however, a receipt will be required. Within 60 days of the customer purchasing the item, Mytopia may provide details allowing the return of the item at no cost to the customer (where freight costs apply). If the product failure is found to not fall within the warranty provisions or statutory rights provided, you may be required to pay the transport and/or inspection costs (Estimates will be advised).

Just tell them that the item is not able to be easily posted or returned, and tell them to organise a courier.

        • If you are buying from ebay and they managed to ship it to you Australia wide they can just argue that you can ship it back and the ACCC wont really do anything

          • @qwerty: Not necessarily. Appliances online have an eBay store. I recently bought a fridge from them and they delivered using their own network of delivery guys. If it needed repair they would have to organise pickup.

        • Thanks. I'm going to get in touch and see what they can do.

Generally you're responsible for paying for returning it, and get reimbursed if confirmed it has a warranty applicable problem. (So keep receipts).

    • Yeah, just trying to figure out if it comes under the 'difficult to move' items such as large TVs and dishwashers etc.

Only you know what the washing machine looks like. There's no black and white test or criteria.

Edit: had a look at the listing. It's less than a metre tall and almost only half a metre wide and deep.

Also, were you really using that (which cost $350) as your main washing machine? Smh…

Our old machine was a $390 front loader and it worked perfectly for the 2 years we had it before selling it. Not sure what the smh is about?

  • doesnt paypal do return shipping?

Not that hard to get it to 7 hills by renting a van or airtasker it

    • It takes a bit more effort if you live in Melbourne :)

If it was Kogan, we could grab a 'car next door' but unfortunately they're only NSW based.

You can all learn from this not to buy large appliances from online sellers that are in a different part of Australia.
    ALTERNATIVES.
ALDI they now have stores all over Australia and have washing machines about 3 times a year.

GOODGUYS. Annual car park sale they buy in lots of stuff that is very cheap and it is an advertising exercise as they pick up lots of new customers.

GUMTREE lots of excellent 2nd hand buys one of my favorite shopping sites. Recently got the buy of a lifetime - I had been looking for Bose direct reflecting speakers in mint condition and there was an add 6 Pairs of Bose speakers 6 power amps and one Pre Amp was in an expensive Western Suburb and the add had been up for 10 minutes, made contact. She was moving to a small apartment. The speakers had never been worked hard they had mainly been used as part of a Background music system there was one pair of 501's from the lounge room 2 pairs of 401'a and 3 pairs of 301's.

  • Oh wow, I haven't seen these front loaders in a long time. These are ~15 year old rebadged LG top loaders.

making loud squeaking noises when it agitates, and the spin is also very noisy

Everything you have described is standard for these machines. They were back then and likely still are, terrible.

Returning it won't solve anything. They'll just say nothing is wrong with it and refuse to reimburse your courier costs.

it doesn't have a delicate wash

Buy a front loader if you want an actual legit delicate wash.

But if you want to return it just focus on this aspect and demand a refund. It's eBay. You'll likely win if a dispute case is raised.

  • For larger items like washing machines, manufacturers tend to send around a service agent to do testing and warranty repairs, at least if it's one of the major brands. With a no-name brand like this one it might be more of an issue. I'd suggest an ebay dispute as suggested above and maybe see whether you can extend the budget to a branded entry level front-loader especially if you need a delicates setting.

Heard plenty of people plead innocence here and get shot down by the informed contributors

    Here is another one.

    Get ready everyone….

The machine is clearly over 4 months old and a very cheap machine at that.
And we dont really know if OP has overloaded the machine - but I say they have given the machines behaviour.
I live in a block of units and see plenty of people shoving clothes into a washing machine and expecting it to work and then wonder why its misbehaving and/or eventually broken down.

And what does OP expect for a rock bottom priced bargain washing machine? OMG!

OPs only complaint is "noise" Really?

As I understand the machine is still functioning.
So there is technically nothing wrong with it. (yet)

These days, in most cases, no matter where you buy a washing machine if you want to return the machine, its up to you to organise the return at your own cost however you do that.
    This is no different.

So OP pays the return shipping cost - Its the norm

And its more than likely in the sellers conditions of purchase and return policy over which we have no control since OP agreed to those at time of purchase.

So this whole post is a total waste of time.

Next time dear OP dont skimp and buy a decent brand at a good retailer

Or at least go to Kmart and buy a cheap Homemaker washing machine because Kmart will always stand behind thier products - and thier Homemaker products aren't bad either
