David Jones: Change of Mind Returns Now 30 or 60 Days

We offer an exchange or refund for Change of Mind on items within 60 days of purchase on products purchased on or after 1 August 2019 with the exception of our 30 Days and Special Exceptions items.

David Jones remained perhaps the last (major) retailer to have no time limit on change of mind returns after Officeworks amended theirs to 30 days a few years ago.

However, it seems that purchases before 1 August 2019 can still be returned at any time, so unlike Officeworks, the new David Jones Returns Policy is not retrospective?

Not sure why you linked to that, when a change of mind return is an exception to any ACL rule

Consumer guarantees do not apply if you:

    • got what you asked for but simply changed your mind, found it cheaper somewhere else, decided you did not like the purchase or had no use for it

30-60 days is ample time if you simply changed your mind

  • Purchases made before August 1 2019 can definitely be returned anytime.

Also the 30 days for special exceptions like designer shoes has been there for a few years now.

Please post back on how you go. I can't possibly imagine that'd actually be allowed, would it?

If he has the receipt and tags and it's obviously unused and it's not on the list of special exceptions e.g. not a pillow, they'll accept it.

          • @kerfuffle: But… I mean… this is probably why they're going broke. What if it's now been discontinued? Or out of season? Or they don't have any others left of this one product that'll be hanging out by itself?

@HighAndDry: Sell it or send it back to the supplier. When I did my training, they used an example of slippers that were in a box for five years.

              • @kerfuffle: Wow. I wonder if supplies have now changed their policies too, because they'd have the same "discontinued/out-of-season/etc" issues too… though I guess at far less cost.

confirmed via email and in person yesterday. I can return it so long as its in a sellable position :)

          • @Starlight8: Honestly, that's pretty cool of DJs. Unfortunately for DJs though, I don't think I or anyone else will be significantly influenced to buy from them over another seller just due to this, if there is any kind of significant price difference.

@HighAndDry: Not really cool; just abiding by their Returns Policy which states that purchases made prior to August 1 and meet the criteria can be returned any time.

@kerfuffle: I mean - cool that they have this policy at all. But… also probably part of why they're going broke.

@HighAndDry: Probably going broke because their IT is shit to be honest. That and not enough staff; the Foodhall has gone down heaps since I used to work there …

                  • @kerfuffle: That's a shame. I used to, when much younger, love gawking at all the fancy foods in their foodhall. I still go there to find hard-to-find or niche premium food gifts for people.

                    • @HighAndDry: yeh it looks like they are discontinuing a lot of fine food products i enjoy buying.

  • Having a change of mind return policy longer than say… 2 days seems unnecessary. I can understand giving customers a little time, but unlimited? Even 30 days seems extra.

I guess my father has used the return policy at Bunnings many times in the past after a week because he didn't need certain things for his projects. What kind of stuff are people returning 30 days after buying in David Jones or Officeworks though?

    • +1

Gifts that you got on sale and you found something better, etc. Stuff that went on sale/sale even further after you bought it and you bought it again to get the better price e.g. jeans

    • You really can't think of a scenario? I don't think you're trying.
