TPG Sending SMS to Upgrade from ADSL+ to NBN

I am constantly being bombarded with SMSs from TPG to "upgrade" my home internet from ADSL+ to NBN.

I am not thinking of not having internet at home anymore at all and use my mobile tethering. I get 230gig a month on my current plan.

Has anyone gone that route and what have you missed and would you re-sign?

  • I would be tethering, 2 x apple tv, 3 x mac's, 3 x iPads, 3 x iPhones, wireless security camera, wireless printer, solar system and a house full of Sonos, lol no thanks.

    • Lol yeah I dont have that much .. just Netflix, 1 ipad and phone

      • Well if you just use those for netflix i guess it would work.

      • Do you use your main phone for this? I'd suggest using at least a secondary phone, if not a mobile router. Though if you go the mobile router, that data allowance/plan might be terminated for using it not-as-intended.

But if using your main phone:

        1. That'll kill the battery's longevity;
        2. It'll degrade the internet speeds of the phone; and
        3. You can't have anything running at home when you're out.
  • I also have 200GB+ on my mobile but to constantly turn mobile hotspot on/off and battery usage stop me from doing this. Also friends and family connect to home broadband when they come over

    • Good point. hmmm

  • I did exactly this. I got an Optus plan w/ 200gig. I pulled the sim out of the tablet and threw it in a Netgear 785 Mobile Hotspot with the basestation (for stronger antenna).

I get good connection speeds most of the time. And have been able to hook up my home automation and sundry (3 google home, 1x chromecast, 2x WIFI power points, 1 tablet, 1 laptop, plus guests) without too many complications.

The issues I have faced are:
    - Slow connectivity to my server - to be expected over wifi
    - Weather dependent - if it's particularly stormy the speeds do suffer at times
    - Filling up wifi slots - with so many devices on the wifi it does get a little chockers, i'm almost at the limit.
    - Modem drop outs - I bought the modem used, and is likely more hardware related, but occasionally the modem will drop out and require a re-set for the network to be operational again.

At the time of taking on the plan i was living on a boat - and so it was the only option i had. Now back in my apartment, I definately feel it's a small step back off my home broadband connection of yester year. When the plan runs out i'll probably move back to home broadband. But saying that, everything does work, and i'd be interested to see what performance would be like with a better wifi router.

For OP's uses, I'd have no issues recommending ditching the home broadband.
