iPhone 7 Plus Weird Charging Issue

Hi All,

I have an iPhone 7 Plus which is approx. 2 years old now. Battery holds 88% charge and supports peak normal performance as per battery information shown in settings.

The default charge is 5W which comes with the phone itself.

The problem - phone charges 100% using 5W charger but starts dropping the battery to 75% within 2/2.5 hrs without even any heavy use. Consider this is a plus phone.

Then I changed the charging habit. I am charging my phone in the car while driving to work, it was 75% when I stopped charging this morning and this is towards end of the day and phone is still holding 63% battery after fair use during the day. I am assuming the car charging socket is 12W.

This is the first time I have experienced this sort of issue and your feedback/ solution to this problem would be helpful.

Many thanks for your time.

  • iPhone \ battery

    • Thanks. As I said, battery still holes 88% charge and supports peak normal performance. How it is possible that it doesn't hold charge from 5W default charge but holds charge VERY well from a car charger which I assume is 12W?!

  • Battery needs to be replaced

  • Batteries wear out if every day they drain and have to be recharged a lot, or if you charge them when the phone is already hot/and/or in use.

2 years is enough, but many last much longer, esp in a plus. Depends on how many apps you run. Many apps, most commonly games and social media, can do worse than halve your battery life.

What was your previous charging routine?
    Charging at night only?
What apps/non standard services are running? Of the ones you use all the time, what has updated om the time you've noticed the drain?
Take a look at the usage stats by app, see what is using the most power, say by the time you've arrived at work.
Start recording the results each day at the same time, after a week or perhaps less you will have some clues
Without being able to single out an app or activity that is root cause, probably best thing to do is backup and perform a full reset. Then rebuild from backup. If that doesn't work, a genius (or you, if you know how with xcode or itunes), can re-flash the phone with a recent image of iOS, and then you can restore your stuff from backup. That gets rid of any possible update-related problems that may, in extraordinary situations, cause such things to persist. It takes them only a short while to do this in an Apple shop.

Tip: To maximise battery life, don't place it on charge in the sun, and let it cool before placing it on a charger, and avoid Qii (wireless) chargers that get hot. Always use a low power (1A) charger when time permits, it will allow the battery to remain cooler as it charges

    • Thinking more about before I do complete reset this weekend, I am still wondering how it is possible that it doesn't hold charge from 5W default charge but holds charge VERY well from a car charger which I assume is 12W?!

      • Perhaps when you charge in the car it tops up differently for some reason. Most likely it is due to the temperature of your phone during your test(s?). If hot, it will reduce charge speed, and won't be able to charge the battery chemistry as effectively

One adapter that is not faulty is only different from another in its capacity, except some cheapies may have a greater voltage output variance. eg 4.9 or 5.2, not 5.0V. When faulty, some can have a bad waveform that upsets the charger or drop out when a component gets too hot… the charger is in the phone, so all you are changing is the power supply.

Seriously, it all depends on the apps you install. Consider them first, not chargers/hardware. Test after the reset, before you load any new apps. Commonly of note are apps like WeChat, Faesesbook, Twatter and many other social apps that do constant I/O and spend all their time uploading espionagetelemetry and other surveillance info are best avoided if you want longevity let alone care about your security

  • Hi. I really appreciate your time and detailed input. I will follow steps mentioned over the weekend to try and see what works. Thanks once again for your valuable time.
