Clean, Solid Android < $400

Hey all

Looking for a new phone for my partner as hers has died. I have a OnePlus 5T and love its solidness, reliability, and being free of crap addons etc. I'd buy another one of those but I can't find them anywhere.

So, looking for recommendations for a cheap (ish - less than $400 ideally) phone that is solid and will last a long time and runs pretty clean Android. Sick of buying a new cheapo every 12 mo.

Doesn't need anything fancy, just nice and quick at every day stuff (no games or anything) and with a nice camera. Hook me up!

I should also add that it should have a decent battery and b28 etc, all the normal stuff people here want.

      Only 3GB RAM ?

I'm in the same boat with the same requirements.

I've narrowed my selection to Samsung A30 but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

  • I've been using the Sharp Aquos S3 as a spare phone. I don't take any photos with it so the mediocre camera doesn't bother me.

There is a 'new' player in this market apparently:

    Gets a decent review here:

    • Looks like a rebadged Xiaomi.

Unknown, likely unsupported, with no aftermarket accessories does not scream solid or reliable to me but thank you for the suggestion!

  • I'd personally pay a bit extra and opt for a Pixel 3a on sale, but that's because I value the Pixel-exclusive features. Otherwise, a very cursory search yielded the OnePlus 3, which seems like it might do the job – particularly price-wise

What are the pixel exclusive features exactly? I don't think she's willing to spend Pixel money unfortunately, she just doesn't care that much. Thanks for the OnePlus 3 rec!

Besides, these threads keep popping up every now and again, the last time, I answered it here:

    • Sony XZ Premium for $400
    • LG V30 for $400
    • Moto G7 Plus for $350
    • Nokia 8.1 for $450
    • Nokia 7 Plus for $400
    • Nokia 7.1 for $350
    • Xiaomi Mi 9t for $450
    • Redmi PocoPhone F1 for $350
    • Huawei P30 Lite for $380
    • Huawei P20 Pro for $500
    • Razer Phone 2 for $580
    • Samsung S9 for $550
    • Samsung A70 for $520
    • Samsung A50 for $400
    • Samsung A30 for $300

…gotta be quick to snag the deals on OzBargain, maybe setup subscriptions
(also check Facebook Marketplace/gumtree/eBay/Chinese Online Stores etc etc)

    • LG V30 vs Samsung A30, which wins out of those 2?

      • +2

V30 wins on just about all accounts (bar maybe battery life). The CPU is well ahead of the V30 and it has an extra 1GB RAM (models in Aus (AU Stock - Optus, JB, BigW, MobileCiti etc) that I've seen of the A30 come with 3GB). Having tried the A30, it feels much, much slower than my old Galaxy S8 which shares its CPU with the LG V30 (Snapdragon 835).

  • Samsung A40s (Grey import)

Don't know your location but a 2nd hand as-new phone may also work. Purchased (few days old) a P30 lite earlier in the week from Gumtree for $230 (asking price):

Box, accessories & JB Hi-Fi receipt was provided. Person was given the phone to use but decided to stick with Apple.
