Suzuki Jimny Price and Wait Time

Looking to buy a 2019 Suzuki Jimny (Brisbane area) seems like wait time is around 18 months and no pricing discount at all. Any one here manage to either get it quicker or at least a small discount?

A wait time of 18 months would suggest it has very high demand, which also means there's no reason dealers would be looking to offer discounts.

You'd have to call around. Each dealership will have an allocation. It sounds like it is in high demand so chances are, allocations are all sold and every dealer will be trading on a first come first serve basis, ie. Stand in line.

Just wait the 18 months or so. Typically, the wait will be shorter (there are exceptions) as people drop out or production speeds up. Probably able to negotiate a little too as it wouldn't be so hot.

maybe look at the second hand market or ex demo

    • +6

New model hasn't been out that long, so nothing secondhand, and why do you think you'd find a demo if the wait period is 18 months…? It doesn't work that way

      • The dealer wouldn't want too many k's on their demos so they would sell them at a certain amount of ks and 18 months is the wait time for the general public, no doubt the manufacturer would have allocated stock for their seller network. Also given the popularity they probably get a lot of people test driving them so the turnaround would be quite high.

Nothing second hand right now yes but something will come up within 18 months no doubt.

Not to mention the savings for OP for buying second hand, due to new car deprecation.

We have a hybrid Camry demo here that we've had for 12 months, because we can't replace it.

No, dealers don't get any extra ordering spots to put on demos. Doesn't happen. Preference is given to the order bank, then to cars to have in stock, not the other way around.

If a dealer sells a demo, then they have nothing to demo customers in, which would mean they'd lose out on future orders.

Not to mention the savings for OP for buying second hand, due to new car deprecation.

Again, this is a new model, no one would be selling a 3 month old car.

@spackbace: Such a pessimist mate, the op wants a new Jimny badly hes willing to post about it. Keep an open mind

@Pluto88: Spackbace works for Toyota and before that Suzuki.

            • +2

@Pluto88: Haha what? An open mind won't materialize a new Jimny out of thin air for OP….

            • +1

@Pluto88: I had no idea car negotiation was based upon wishful thinking.

            • +2

@Pluto88: Just put your want for a new Jimny out into the universe man! The universe will always deliver, just keep on hoping and dreaming, and all your wishes will come true.

          Holy crap I hadn't checked pricing… I wasn't expecting that!

          • +2

@spackbace: They're just taking the piss. There's 33 brand new ones in Sydney metro on car sales from $27.5k up to almost $31k. Fly over and drive back

            • +2

@apsilon: Lol yeah RRP is $23,990 plus on-roads

I think that could be a demo that they're just listing for "oh well if an idiot wants to buy it for that" pricing!

          • +2

            @spackbace: $40k for a 1.5L Suzuki?

AUD has taken a nose dive.

            • @[Deactivated]: Is it sad that I like the brown colour and industrial looks?

              • @Kangal: Only off-road vehicles can pull of brown without looking like turd on wheels. I'd probably also go brown if it were mine.

                • @[Deactivated]: A brown defender does look rather nice. We also know that it can go places where other may struggle to get to.

Could get a second hand Lada Niva.

  • Oh wow they made a new one!

Lots of fun in a mates one of these back in the day.

  • There are several new cars in Sydney at dealers on carsales.com.au. I'd be surprised if there weren't some in QLD either. Discount might be difficult given the demand (I was at a Suzuki dealership last month for a friend but was hoping to see a Jimny in person for my own interest but they had none and weren't expecting any until end Aug and even they were already sold. I didn't ask specifically but got the impression I could have one this year no worries so certainly not an 18 month wait.

Demand will drop off. Suzuki got caught short on how popular these would be world wide so no production needs to catch up. If you can wait you'll get a decent discount. If you can't wait you might have to pay retail as there's little stock around and enough demand that most if not all dealers will be happy to sit on them for now.

When the wait time is 18 months, you're not going to get a discount at all!

If you want one quicker, you'll be paying over RRP to 'jump' the queue.

  • hell yeah. I saw one the other day and got stoked. Everyone should drive a Jimny.

Make sure you actually drive one before you buy it. I drove one, walked away and never looked back. It's a good toy but definitely not a daily driver in my book. Highway driving feels dangerous.

Same. I wanted one from when it was announced. Almost put down the pre-release deposit, but they pulled the “price will be confirmed when stock becomes available”. Decided to wait till one would be available for test drive.

For the initial price I was offered, it was borderline, but the price I was quoted at test drive time, I just laughed it off… test drive it anyway, and wow. Like you said, great toy, but rough as guts. It reminded me of the family Sierra we had 30+ years ago.

Cool retro styling, but not at that price tag…

      • I think they'll drop a couple of grand off the price once demand settles. You can pick up the top of the line Vitara drive away for $35k and while the Jimny may be better offroad, the Vitara would be better in every other way and certainly as your only car.

I'm interested in possibly picking one up just for weekends away camping but I'm in no hurry, don't get away very often at all these days and currently have a Ranger. See how they're going mid next year.

        • Same. I'll still get one, but I'll wait for a while until a few low KM used ones come on the market.

    • Me too. Really like these and was tempted when it first came out, but when they told me the driveaway price and wait time I lost all interest. Then started reading about the terrible safety rating, and just felt I couldn't live with it as a daily driver. Would be a great second car/weekend toy but not for these prices, maybe in 5-10 years time pick one up used.

Unless you live way out in the bush and do most of your driving on rough dirt roads, or have a second car, it's not a good idea.

Buy an old Jimny and stick a 1.9 tdi into it, and some Hilux diffs. Would be a weapon and still cheaper than a new one.

    • I've heard a few of the Jap motors are plug n play almost.

Whack an SR20DET in there ;)

They are great for engine swaps. Divorced transfer case makes it very easy. I had an old Sierra that had a 7k Toyota engine, was a bit of a weapon.

  • FYI, in JMC Launceston Tassie, the waiting time is 9 months. Perhaps, you can buy it from there and re-register the car in Brisbane. Good luck with the Jimny.

  • Update to all - had the car for about 9 months now, easily the funnest car ever had. The go anywhere ability is something I never thought I needed.

    • So you only waited 3 months?

      • By month 3 I decided to pay a premium and buy a marked up demo model.
Not financially wise but emotionally exciting

  • I noticed you can import the Jimny 05/2018 + JB64W (660cc and smaller dimensions than global car) from Japan. It is on the SEV interim arrangement list
