[Updated] -ACCC Investigating Team USA Debacle

Hey guys,

Has anyone read the recent article on ACCC looking into this whole Team USA bs ?

https://7news.com.au/sport/basketball/lebron-james-steph-cur…

Look, I've seen people getting laughed at for paying top money for the games, which I absolutely think it's trash. We had no control over players pulling out and we were misled by the way it was advertised.

I've contacted TicketTek just then but they are most likely not going to refund anything back to me.

I've never made a consumer complaint to ACCC before, how hard is it and how long does the whole process usually take?

Thank you!

[UPDATE] - contacted TEG Live and they are happy to refund the whole amount back to me…Hope you all got it as well.

I've contacted them using the below email.

Just keep pressing with ticketek that they are vastly different to what you purchased and they will refund

They gave a ton of refunds out when the last ufc main event changed in melbourne

I think you do have a case. The withdrawals were more than substantial and mostly elective. Exhibit A of the promotional poster would be legendary.

Let's be honest, we always knew that the top flight players weren't going to come (LeBron, Steph, Kawhi, AD and co). I thought people like Klay/Draymond would have come, or at least people like Damian Lillard, but I'm still excited to see them play. I wish Fox didn't pull out, but I want to see Jayson Tatum and Mitchell tear it up

      1. Have you seen the ad? They always had those top players on it i.e. Misleading

      2. The cost for the tickets are based on the superstars otherwise people won't pay for the amount advertised.

      3. Wth is that bus ticket/driver comparison?

    My thoughts on this-
If they advertised Team USA using a few of the players now not showing up, you should be entitled to a refund.

A few years ago, I got a refund from a concert because half the group didn't make it. In that case, the refund was offered by the ticketing co., I did not seek it. I took it up.

Edit: Just saw the article you posted saying "NBA superstars were used to promote the Boomers’ upcoming exhibition matches against Team USA – now almost all of them have pulled out."

I would say a refund should definitely be expected, if requested.

Also an Australian plated a big part in it, knowing full well they were not playing.

      Piece of Sh*t.

    • Thx man.. I'm a die hard nba fan but almost the whole squad pulled out.. I'm still in shock..

  • also i dont get why they increased the prices despite a lot of superstars have already pulled out.

      R u for real…

  • Why just Melbourne? I went to boomers vs Canada in Perth. What a sh!t show that was. No Canadian NBA players, no Ben Simmons and Mills and Bogut didn't even play.

Spoke to Consumer Affairs for my state, and they said they’ve been inundated with calls. TEG (the promoter) has failed to anyone respond in any reasonable amount of time, which had VCAT (as close to) agreeing (as possible) with my supposition that TEG seem to be delaying responding, in the hopes that people will use their tickets and give them an excuse to avoid providing a refund.

    • that's me…haven't received a response - I'm going to use the tickets because I'm not going to risk it but I will go after them.

oh well, will see..worst case I guess I will have to cope the L

    • That's the 'easier to ask for forgiveness than permission' approach to business.

  • how did you contact TEG Live? Ive been calling their line but no one picks up!

      • thanks Sauce 2k - will give it a try!

  • Ditto, howd you get in touch with TEG ?

    • Please see updated post

  • Hi, how long did it take for them to refund you?

I sent them an email this morning requesting a refund for tomorrows game.

  • Emailed teglive no response from them. Anyone receive guidance of next steps? I have read people were moved from the lower level to better seats but I don't know if I will be provided this option. I will be with my young child so haven't got the ease of moving.

  • Did you get bad tickets or just the high level tickets? Was the basis of the refund the players / advertising? Or was your view obstructed?

  • Hi just received an email from teg live. I was all set to attend the game today but looks like if I do attend it might make it more difficult to claim the refund. Here's the email in full hopefully it helps others in this forum

Thank you for your correspondence regarding your tickets to attend the game between USA Basketball and the Australian Boomers at Marvel Stadium, Melbourne.

We had 51,000 fans in the house on Thursday night for the largest basketball game on Australia soil and the atmosphere was electric. However, we acknowledge your disappointment regarding the changes to the USA Basketball squad, although we note that these games will still feature the best available players who will compete for their respective nations at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China, commencing on 31 August 2019. USA Basketball are shortly to finalise their 12-man squad, full of NBA players, while the Boomers team will feature up to 6 players with NBA experience.

Accordingly, we are very hopeful that you will decide to still attend this historic game to witness the best Australian Boomers team ever assembled taking on the current FIBA World Champion and Olympic Champion, the United States, in front of around 50,000+ fans looking to beat Thursday’s crowd.

However, if you have decided you will not be attending the game then, in order for us to consider your refund request, please provide us with the following details:

    • proof of purchase

    • point of purchase (internet/agency/phone/VIP Now)

    • time and date of purchase

    • number of tickets purchased

    • ticket category

    • total value of purchase

Once we have received the above information, we will review your particular circumstances and will respond to you as soon as practicable.

Again, we are hoping you will still attend to cheer on our mighty Boomers at Marvel Stadium!

  • Hey, did you attend the actual event?

  • Did anyone have any luck requesting a refund from TEG Live? I have just received this email back from them - "

"We have now had an opportunity to carefully review your request for a refund, which we note is based on your claim that you purchased tickets due to TEG Live advertising that certain players would be participating in the game.  However, at the time you purchased your tickets, TEG Live had not commenced any advertising featuring any players.  On the contrary, at the time you purchased tickets, TEG Live’s advertising was specifically promoting the games being between USA Basketball and the Australian Boomers teams and did not feature any player imagery.  Accordingly, given your particular circumstances, we have decided to decline your refund request. "

Im pretty furious as I decided not to attend the game thinking if I did it would effect my chances of a refund.
Wondering if I can take this further…

    • When did you buy the tickets?

Can always check with the ACCC and other consumer rights organisations

    • Damn that sucks. I actually attended but the seats (arena floor) were shocking so requested a refund. Still waiting on a response from TEG. If I was you I would take it up with ACCC.

    • i got the same response word for word.

  • ACCC couldnt help. They directed me to Consumer Affair which i would do today.

    • Every last one of them responded by suspending their ties to the league.

      Well that’s a shame.

  • how long does the whole process usually take?
