JB Hi-Fi May Sell Xiaomi Phones

this just came on my news feed. No confirmation and it's a rumour most likely, we only have to wait one more week to find out.

Ozbargain and a user has been mentioned on the website.

Would users purchase from there to recieve local warranty, stock and au chargers for a little extra?

Would prefer if they sold OnePlus phones…

    • So true. The market for OnePlus would grow so much more.

I've never owned a one plus. My next phone may be another xiaomi. I've been happy with it.

      • OnePlus are good if you want a Nexus/Pixel style stock experience with improvements. OxygenOS packs a lot of features and customisations that should be in AOSP. They also get updates quickly with my OP6 receiving the August security patches last week with a heap of new features.

    • A lot of it depends on manufacturer support in terms of having local repair or tech support infrastructure in place.

    • They did sell OnePlus phones before, specifically the OnePlus 5 (iirc).
But the company Oppo decided to pull out of the Aussie market, and instead push its midrange devices instead.

    • When is OnePlus coming back to Aus :( I want another OnePlus5. Best phone I've ever had.

  • Jesus the 9T goes from $455 to $700 (assuming JB is selling the 128 for that). More than $250 for a local warranty? Not really worth it.

I kind of disagree. $240 for a 2 year local warranty isn't crazy money. And if you can combine this with some of their JBHIFI Telstra plans with gift cards thrown in you could end up with a really good deal.

$455 is an amazing price for this phone overseas but that is completely without any real warranty.

    • It does sound like a lot. I guess it depends on the phone, how much you spend & how long the warranty is.

  • Saw my local JB HiFi sell a Xiaomi Mi A3. It's quite a nice device for the money.

  • I have had a few Xiaomi phones and none of them has broken down for no reason. The warranty/support won't be important for me, unless it's only a few dollars more.

However, if they sell their own ROM, not the MIUI, it might be worth a little bit more. It's a bit more work to unlock the phone, at one point you had to send an international SMS to get the code to unlock the phone to install a ROM. And there're no updates for custom ROMs.

    • I have been pleased with xiaomi also. I may fork out a bit extra and get a more better xiaomi phone. The redmi note 7 has been great and live the camera.

I haven't installed a custom rom onto it. Do you think I should?

  • The Mi 9T Pro are coming out at the moment, so I think they'd want to probably looking at that market a little more seriously.

    Band 28?

      AND NFC!

At least on the Toby one. Watch JB source the non-NFC one :(

      • +2

Yeah I can understand no NFC on Chinese phones as mobile payments are mainly QR based. But here no NFC is a killer

  • I know Xiaomi Australia (Panmi Pty Ltd) have been having top level talks with a lot of companies lately and their Sydney showroom for corporate only is pretty impressive from what I saw inside so lets hope this is true.

Worth mentioning that Roborock (as some have noticed) have officially launched in Australia. While not actually owned by Xiaomi they are an investor and were responsible for the first Mi vacuum. Perhaps we'll see more ecosystem partners entering the market soon?

    • A lot of ozbargainers would jizz at the site of a Xiami showroom. unfortunately, the prices would be higher.

      • Yeah they have one in Chippendale NSW already but not open to the public yet unfortunately.

Higher prices are expected considering they are a distributor and it's AU stock with AU warranty.

  • Our old friends at PC Byte are also a service centre for Xiaomi products in Australia too.

    • Thanks. I didn't know.

      • Though if you're buying from JB you'll just return to them under warranty.

  • Given the prices for the Mi 9T are 2-300 higher than online, I don't think I'll be buying one from JB, but hopefully they have them on display so I can get a feel for the phone before making a purchase decision.

  • Kind sucks that we get the Mi 9T which has the Snapdragon 730. Its the exact copy of the Redmi K20, not the K20 Pro
