Father's Day Gift Help - Which Capsule Coffee Machine to Get?

So I'm a complete noob to the coffee capsule world but wanted some advice on what to get my Dad.

Currently looking at these 2:
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/home-appliances/philips/philips-lo…

OR https://www.amazon.com.au/Nespresso-DeLonghi-Essenza-Capsule…

Unless there's a better alternative on sale right now. I assume once I buy either machine I'll be able to use the Coles pods etc. ?

This is part of Father's Day deals for 2019.

  • Yep get the mini it doesn't take up much space is easy to clean. Nespresso capsules always seem to be better imo but yeh coles or other nespresso compatible work. Nothing actually beats one of the grinder espresso type coffee though. I actually got the 100 capsule offer with nespresso you get 100 random but they are still good and even if you value pods at 35c that's not a bad deal. Nespresso are usually 70c ea

    • So the Mini? I can do the Myer 20% ebay and cash back to bring the philips down to 120 is it worth $11 more? Parents don't have time for a grinder so just looking for something convenient.

      • I don't have the philips but a friend does. It does make more coffee in volume which is what anoys me about nespresso. Im not sure if that Phillips is nespresso compatible and if so what pods would you need with this machine.

I usually use 2 pods per cup on short shot then do a milk latte style drink. Yes 2 pods which is more expensive but it's good.

        • The Philips as indicated by the link the Op gave IS nespresso compatible

        • How long did your 100 pod promo take to arrive from redemption?

          • @senpai: I think at most a couple of weeks.

  • +3

If dad is really conscious about where he spends his money, he might enjoy the Aldi alternative to Nespresso.
Usually 37c a capsule and the machine will cost only $80 or something. Does the same thing as the Nespresso capsules and machines.
Can't recommend it myself as I don't drink coffee but some of my tightass friends say it's better overall and it the long-term than Nespresso.

    • +1

+1 for Aldi. We found it tastes better than Nespresso too.

Or if your Dad goes though a lot of coffee, it's cheaper again in the long run to get a machine that takes beans.

    • +1

+1 for Aldi. Bought one for dad and he loves it - can't really compare it to the Nepresso though, haven't tried one.

  • Does he really live his coffee?

Same as above. Go for the aldi machine. I have it and it's pretty good. Get the frother as well.

  • I would get a nespresso comptatible machine, so that he has a wide range of capsules to choose from (including supermarket generic ones) rather than being locked into a system from one vendor

  • Agreed nespresso compatible is the way to go. IF possible get one with a decent milk frother since that's what makes the coffee great to me (at least if you take it with milk) or even better if you can find a milk frother built in (eg my old latissima plus which cost a bit more has this and it makes a cappuccino with one button).

  • Nespresso creatista or Aldi system

  • I can’t decide between the ALDI machine to the Nespresso. With the milk frother it’s basically the same price as the Nespresso mini.

I should be able to use reusable pods with the mini if I go that route but I just don’t know.
