Which Video Doorbell?

Hi all,

I am looking for a video doorbell which I can connect up to a Google home (to use as a chime) and offers free cloud storage (1 - 2 days for free is okay) but I'm struggling to find options.

Needs to run off battery as I can't hard wire.

I'm happy to go for a Xiaomi or similar.

  • I use http://pl.dahuasecurity.com/products/vto2101e-p-21847.html … But what are you looking for, and what's important for you?

    • Can be easily paired with a Google Home, has free cloud storage of 1 - 2 days at a minimum and 1080 recording.

Bonus points if It's slim profile.

  • Your best option is obviously going to be going the Nest route because Nest == Google. You can't officially get these in Australia, but you can import them and get a sparky to wire them up properly.

The problems you'll have with Nest (and cloud storage in general):
    a) Only live feeds are free, any cloud storage is gonna cost you and it's a cost per camera so it quickly ramps up.
    b) If you go with Nest, you will need decent upload bandwidth (minimum NBN50 tier) because it's not only recording detected events, it's recording everything so uploading 100% of the time.
    c) If you want to integrate it with more things in the future, don't count on it. Google is shutting down the Nest API access, so it won't be able to be used in things like Home Assistant or Smart Things. They are moving all their integrations over to the "Works With Google Assistant" API however, so that API may be open enough in the future to still access stuff - just through the cloud, not locally (which Nest currently allows).

What I'd probably recommend is more of a hybrid system. Something that can pair to Google Home, but can record locally - which you could then choose to sync with DropBox/Google Drive/etc. This is especially easy if you're running a NAS.

Unfortunately I don't have any real suggestions for you as I'm only just starting to look into that stuff now - so I'll be keeping my eye on this thread.

    • @trankillity I updated my post but I can't use Nest as I can't hardwire it.

      • That makes things significantly more difficult. From all my research, the only good battery-powered video doorbell is Ring, which obviously doesn't work so well with Google (being an Amazon company).

You could go the Arlo route though. The Arlo doorbell doesn't have a camera in it, but can pair easily with an Arlo camera to give the same functionality.

  • i am in the same boat with OP. I think I found the solution. Get this https://www.gearbest.com/access-control/pp_009546524456.html which include receiver. This will have the ability to see who is at the front door and you put the receiver near your google home to say "ok google, doorbell" or something when someone pressed the button which trigger in google to broadcast. The problem is, not sure if this product will actually allows you to record your voice as door bell. Maybe can someone confirm this? I never purchased this "Intelligent Video Doorbell with Receiver from Xiaomi youpin - White with Receiver " so I can not comment on how to use or set up.
