Cheapest i5 laptop

I just need the cheapest, el-cheapo i5 laptop. I don't care what rest of the configuration is; if it is first gen or second gen, just have to say intel i5, brand new and cheapest possible

Thanks

  • Thanks Spliniter. I can't go for i3 because of purely emotional reasons. Its meant to be a gift for in-laws; and they think i3 is a lot inferior. Mainly to be used for Skype, web browsing, photo viewing etc.

  • Bought a Toshiba i5 (2nd gen) L750 / 03C from Hardly Normal for $560 on the weekend.

Nice looking laptop, great screen, big buttons - pretty happy.

  • Yeah h4lcyon find is good and meet your in-laws requirement but u better get by tomorrow as the end of year financial sale are ending. You might even get a better deal

    • Just say you want to price match another HN store, they said yes straight away and I kicked myself I didn't offer lower. Try $499 :)

  • lol say OW see if that works

  • So could someone in the briefest way possible just tell me is it worth paying the extra $$$ for an i5 over an i3 ? or even an i7 over and i5 ?

    • +3

Depends on how much extra, and what you are using it for.

The difference between i3 and i5 is the turbo boost function where the processor speeds up while being heavily used - good for games, and other cpu intensive applications. Apart from that they are basically the same thing.

The difference between 1st gen and 2nd gen relates to battery consumption and a 20-30% performance increase.

Suffice to say go for a 2nd gen where possible, and if you only using it for general web surfing, email, skype etc and i3 would be fine. Again if the price diff isn't that much then you can't go wrong with an i5.

You don't need an i7 unless you know you need one, they are not worth the extra $$$ unless you are going to utilise the power.

      • Thanks for the succinct and concise reply. Now it all makes sense

For the sake of completion. I bought lenovo i5 g560 from mln for 579 including shipping.
$50 cashback from MLN and around $48 from ATO (GST claim as travelling overseas) will make it around $480 in the end. Sweet.
    Thank you all.

    • That's a score :)
