Is There Such a Thing as a Sexy Job?

Hiya,
We had the neigbour's teenager son over for dinner tonight and the conversation somehow turned to jobs and what he's looking for in one. His one and only requirement is that it needs to be something "cool" and that will turn him into a chick-magnet.

My wife's tongue-in-cheek suggestion was to become a barista … which got me into thinking: is there really a job/jobs that are universally regarded as cool or sexy? Are you in one of those jobs?

If not, what was your criteria for the choice of a career?

Poll for fun: Do you like your current job?

  • I now works as a barista and I can tell you I get far more old man nagging then hot thick’s coming into the shop……

    • You need to work at a club, not an old man pub haha

I think there's a bigger problem at hand than solving this person's 'chic-magnet' dilemma - it's the fact that he's setting himself up for failure if this is truly his criteria for a job.

What would have been better than yourself and your wife entertaining this fool's vapid and inept conversation is giving him a verbal lashing and perhaps some admonishment that this exactly how to become a bum in real life.

You can be a dentist and wow people with your charisma, looks and personality.
Your neighbour's son sounds like a shallow person and you guys as mature adults failed to point this illogical person to the right direction.

    EDIT:

SO even if we follow this flawed logic of looking at a 'chic-magnet' job, say Fireman, Pastry Chef, Plastic Surgeon, Barista - what would happen to this teen if he took up this career and didn't have hot chicks melt at his feet?

    • He'll never be a bum. He's the only child of well-to-do parents.

      • What and they're gonna make him a CEO, or successful businessman?

His thought-process is disgusting at that age.

        • At the very least, he'll inherit the beach house and his parents' shares portfolio. He won't be hurting for money. So worst case scenario, he'll be a rich beach bum.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: You're equally deluded - even if he has a chance to inherit a house and some sinking equity shares, he'd be well in his 50s/60s.
But having said that, judging by his thought-process on life and a career of a 'chic magnet' role, he'll likely blow that money too.

Your advice as mature, married couple was to provide some form of career advice to that loser.
In the form of: Do what you enjoy, so you come to work happy and earn a living.

              @frostman:

              You're equally deluded

I'm not privy to his parents' networth but I do know that his mother's a forensic psychologist and his Dad's a successful businessman and their front yard's the beach. They're not hurting for money! He's their only child too - they'll look after him.

Your advice as mature, married couple was to provide some form of career advice to that loser.

To be fair, he'll more than likely end up going to uni and is looking for something fun to do in the meantime. Like I've said before, he's a good kid. He'll find his way in the world.

Your neighbour's son sounds like a shallow person

This is not uncommon in that age group, he has plenty of time to grow up.

    Giglo

    • Lol… was waiting for someone to mention this…

The word is 'gigolo' and no, he's not suave enough to pull it off.

A part time job where he's talking to women constantly, which could be retail cosmetics or fashion. You are on the right track with barista. If he gets his hours up talking and building conversations with women on the job, then that leads to a lot of confident and understanding of the opposite sex.
A part time job in retail or cosmetics would require a deal of personality, charm and good looks to begin with, so if he hasn't got all three (judging by his requirements for a sexy job, charm may not be there), then forget about working there. First impressions last.

The sexiest people in the world are at work right now.

with the exception of those sexy ones who have fathered kids and are spending quality time with their spawn as we speak . I've just had to sing "Isn't she lovely" by Stevie Wonder to my toddler's 💩 before I was allowed to flush it down the toilet😕

Being a parent is work, and a job.

Singing to a poo deserves its own thread, far away from here please

require a deal of personality, charm

  • A job which pays heaps of dollars is "sexy" to a lot of people..

Does he want to try being a gigolo ?

  • Ladies hair dresser?

  • For a young person, bar tender is for sure going to get him a lot of opportunities with the ladies, needs to be a decent bar thou

    • I used to bartend at a Hilton. Great opportunities with the ladies… and dames and duchesses.

Most were old enough to be my grandmother.

      Good tips though.

      • Just the tips?

        • Oh you. I know what you're doing. ;)

  • I'm slowly transitioning to working full time on at a vineyard/winery, doing both the viticultural and wine sales/marketing… I consider it sexy AF (as does the missus, but she's a huuuuuuge wine nerd, currently studying to be a wine maker)… Outdoors, in the sun, lots of birdlife/wildlife on the property… It doesn't pay what I was earning in the mines (but about 66% less), but it's a hell of a lot more enjoyable (even during the summer months, when I'm drowning in boobsweat).

    • But, as a young 'un, barwork certainly didn't hurt with the ladies. Barista would be a good option, depedning on where you were.

I live in regional Vic. Seems if you're a tradie who plays footy - chick magnet!

    • I can confirm this.

    • Surprised this wasn't mention earlier. 100% correct answer

  • Firefighter or Lumberjack. Take your pick

  • I don't know a sexy job for a dude, but for a girl, hooters.

  • I'm pretty surprised by the poll results. At the time of writing, some 24% (nearly 1 in 4…) of respondents are in their dream job ("Yes love it. It's my dream job!")

I take it this refers to a job that could possibly not get any better in terms of all factors related to job happiness (am I right?).

As a 45yo white collar worker, I can honestly, sadly, say that not too many of my peers are in their "dream job", maybe 1 in 10 or 15? It would be interesting to see the demographic background of these numbers.

To those who picked "…dream job!" - why is that?

Everyone will feel that they're not paid their worth. Remove the financial consideration from the equation.

The question that remains is, "do I like what I do?", in it's purest form.

Yes I do. I provide a service most people can never provide themselves, and that service improves one's quality of life.

      What's there not to love?

    • This sums it up for most scientists I believe.

  • ASIO…

If i told you my job, i'll have to kill you? :p

  • Ask a Ming Moll the question the next time you're buying a new car.

    • Who/ what is a ming moll?

      Edit: Just googled it.

Labourer; to show off his bum crack.

  • Doesn’t matter. a tall good looking guy could be a garbage man and women will still love him

  • Rebel.
    Unemployed and loving it.
    Animal welfare.
F'ing good looking and super positive. Job doesn't mean shit.
Anything on stage, film or TV.
Doctor. Astronaut. And finally a visiting alien.

  • Ive been advised that aircrew have a lot of fun.

The thing is, sooner or later you 'grow out' of those jobs and it no longer has an appeal.

Teenage me would have signed up to be a bra fitter or gynaecologist. A few years of maturity show that these kinds of jobs would not be that attractive in reality

    • Hey my optometrist was really hot, but remembering that once he turned my eyelids inside out is a big turnoff

  • E-thot

  • If looking cool is the kids primary concern, that kid clearly needs to grow up.

To answer your question, pilot sounds pretty good to me.

  • Vote for tradie

  • I don’t think the job matters but I find:
    1. Women find men who have high paying jobs sexy.
    2. Men find women who wear sexy uniforms sexy.

  • Looks like JJB disabled his account… haha

  • There are definitely some sexy jobs out there. Blow jobs are sexy when done we.. oh sorry my bad. I didn't realise we were talking about professions!

  • I just wen to the Jag Art of performance drive day at Sandown. I think if you called your self a race car driver that is pretty cool and sexy.
