90cm freestanding induction cooker Smeg vs F&P

Hi Team!

Almost installing the new kitchen for our Reno…. We were going to buy

https://www.binglee.com.au/fisher-paykel-or90sci4x1-90cm-freā€¦

But last night got access to half price Smeg…

https://www.smeg.com.au/product/cs9imxa/

$600 difference between them after discount.

Pros,
Fisher and paykel has smart zones so it can cook rectangle pans

Smeg is a Smeg. Better for resale wow factor.

Other than that, both same size and functionality.

Smeg or Fisher and Paykel??

We have a variation of the 900mm Smeg at the GFs place. Electric oven, gas cooktop. It's a great unit. They are fast heating and even temperature due to the 2 fans/elements. The wok burner could be hotter but that's pretty normal for most domestic stoves.

The freestanding thing is horrible. Dust bunnies and food dropped from the counter during prep accumulate underneath (the floor is cleaned at least twice weekly).

I had it out from the wall recently and the liquid drips between the benchtop and the stove were disgusting. You can't avoid it if you cook a lot (we do).

OTOH, the internals stay really clean.

If it isn't too late, I'd rethink the freestanding look.

I have no experience with the F&P

  • We personally found the controls on our smeg double oven completely unintuitive, it's a bit of a pain in the ass until we got used to it. See if you and your partner can actually play with a demo version, go with what you like best.

  • At our previous house we had an Ilve freestanding so we're happy with the freestanding look. An induction cooktop requires a 40mm benchtop, the wife wants waterfall island so if we go freestanding we can get 20mm stone and save 4-6,000.

I didn't like the Ilve control knob… Fan oven was the last option and had the knob replaced under warranty

  • Put all top of the line Smeg (approx $15k) into our house. Just absolute crap for the money.
Integrated dishwasher blew the main board after four years.
$7k freestanding oven electronics stopped working after a few months. Service guy said the things hadn't been soldered correctly, oven seal doesn't sit properly, screw fitting to hold racks can't be reinstalled properly so it just balances there, if you spill stuff on the inside of the oven door it runs straight down into the pot draw below, when the heating element goes you have to remove the whole oven as it is only accessible from the rear of the unit.
Rangehood hasn't blown up yet, but it's crap that doesn't have a very strong suction and has areas that are impossible to get to for cleaning.
Microwave is just a re-badged generic piece of shit (that's from the repair guy) that blew up after a couple of years light use. Here's a pro tip, never get a Smeg inbuilt microwave in your cabinets or you can never get another brand because of their odd sizing for their trim kit.
I would never get Smeg again even for half price.

  • Ouch…. Noted

    • I too had troubles with my Smeg dishwasher at 4 year mark. So I posted a review on Product Review and the Smeg service manager contacted me and sent independent repair services for free. I expressed my disappointment of the Smeg dishwasher failing after 4 years to the repair man and he said that Smeg was the only company who would come and repair them for free even if the control board was riddled with cockroaches (mine wasn't thank goodness!) I was so impressed that I have just built a new house and gone for Smeg appliances again. I can not comment on electric stove as I chose gas oven Smeg and have been very happy with that. I do find oven door easy to clean as glass just unclips.

Bought the Fisher and Paykel through Good Guys Commercial for $4100… 800$ cheaper than retail. Win!
